Friends of the BQX is looking for a passionate and motivated Deputy Executive Director to co-manage outreach work and daily operations. This person will drive outreach and craft outreach plans with the goal of building grassroots support along the corridor.

 

The Friends of the BQX is a non-profit organization engaged in a grassroots advocacy effort to support a state-of-the-art light rail connecting Brooklyn and Queens. The Deputy Executive Director will collaborate with the Executive Director to drive an advocacy campaign to grow and amplify community support for the first modern streetcar in NYC that will connect an 11-mile corridor between Brooklyn and Queens. Since the Friends’ creation three years ago, we have built a network of thousands of supporters along this booming corridor all of whom believe that improved transit will improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers.

 

 

Responsibilities include:

       Establish and deepen partnerships with key stakeholders along the BQX corridor

       Manage relationships with elected and City officials, agency staff, fellow advocates and community leaders

       Lead a field organizing program to educate residents and workers along the BQX route about the project

       Build and manage a community engagement team and develop an annual field plan

       Strategize, plan and execute a variety of educational events

       Outreach to local business owners to form a task force and create an impact mitigation plan to present to the City

       Develop and help execute public affairs, community engagement, digital, political and policy strategy

       Oversee FoBQX Fellows Program

       Co-manage all daily operations at FoBQX including board interaction; setting and tracking annual budget; lobbying compliance and filings

       Manage ongoing professional development of staff

 

We believe that successful candidates should have the following attributes:  

  • 7-10 years of experience in community politics and organizing
  • Nuanced understanding of all aspects of organizing, including managing campaigns
  • Self-driven and can toggle between operational, managerial and creative mindsets
  • Outgoing with an ability to build strong relationships
  • Ideally, has a special connection to and understanding of the BQX corridor
  • Metrics-driven; will use data to evaluate efficacy of our efforts
  • Has experience developing and leading team
  • Is passionate about equitable transit development, urban planning and community engagement
