The Atlas Project is committed to building the institutional memory of the progressive movement.

Our mission is to arm the progressive community with historical elections data, sophisticated analysis, and real-time updates for all 50 states. We provide political campaigns and progressive organizations a baseline set of information to work from – helping them learn from the past to ensure more progressive victories in the future.

Front End Developer

The primary responsibilities of the Front End Developer are to help build, design and maintain the Atlas Project’s Online Toolkit. This position is responsible for developing new front end modules and data visualizations that will help progressive organizations understand the political landscape. In addition, the Front End Developer is responsible for coordinating with other departments to meet client needs and address any support concerns regarding special projects. The ideal candidate has a background in computer science with an interest in political data and is excited by the prospect of building data visualizations and organizing tools in support of the Atlas Project’s and its clients’ efforts.

 Duties include:

  • Set up and maintain a local development environment
  • Develop new modules and ways of visualizing content
  • Write neat and easy-to-read code
  • Test new code for production
  • Write documentation for new processes as they arise
  • Work on client specific projects
  • Assist the data team in its efforts to collect and audit political data sets.

 Qualifications:

  • Experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript (JQuery, Underscore, Backbone.js)
  • Experience with (or interest in) working with WordPress based sites

·         Experience with internet research or large public datasets

·         Experience with (or interest in) databases and data structures (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc)

·         Command line experience (Ubuntu, Red Hat Linux) and experience SSH’ing into remote servers

·         Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively

·         Ability to work collaboratively as a member of our fast-paced and innovative team

Preferred but not required:

o    A work history in labor, community organizing, or political campaigns

o    Experience with cloud based server management

o    Experience with setting up and managing a code deployment process

o    Experience with setting up and maintaining a virtual box for code development

o    Experience with PHP or any other server side programming language
