Position: Director, Movement Technology

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Location: Flexible: Washington, D.C., New York, or Bay Area, CA preferred

Wellstone Action is hiring a Director to carry on and evolve the incredible legacy of the New Organizing Institute, which recently rolled its essential training programs into Wellstone. In this role, the Director will drive our new strategy to support the next generation of progressive movement practitioners in emerging technology, with a particular focus on data and digital. The Director will lead a team of staff and adjunct trainers, raise resources and ensure a strong financial model for the work, develop deep partnerships with external stakeholders, and directly deliver high-level capacity-building work.

What You’ll Do

As Director, you will work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Impact and be part of the program leadership team. You will shape our overall programmatic vision around data, digital, and other emerging technologies, with a central focus on ensuring the fields are reflective of the broader community. You will work with a highly strategic, results-driven, and good-humored team. And you will join an organization that that cares as much about our people as we do about the work (hint: that’s a lot!).

 

Specific responsibilities include:

 

·       Program leadership

o   Set short- and long-term priorities and plans for impact

o   Regularly evaluate progress to goals and effectiveness of programming, making adjustments and shifts in approach as needed

o   Develop a well-balanced financial model and annual budget for the work, evaluating and evolving the model over time to ensure delivery and sustainability

o   Ensure curriculum and delivery methods are best in class, current, and relevant for both in-person and remote learning

o   Develop relationships with key external stakeholders to inform strategy and create programmatic partnership opportunities

o   Ensure the alumni and stakeholder community is well engaged and supported over time

o   Directly provide high level training, facilitation and coaching for targeted individual and organizational leaders

·       Team leadership

o   Directly supervise core staff dedicated to data and digital capacity-building work

o   Develop team of external consultants and trainers key to program delivery

o   Work across program areas to ensure integration of data and digital content in all training curriculum

 

·       Resource development

o   Drive program-generated income from registration fees and program sponsorships

o   Engage in fundraising from individuals and institutions in concert with Wellstone’s development team

·       Organizational leadership

o   Represent Wellstone in key movement spaces

o   Participate and demonstrate leadership in all relevant organizational spaces, including program leadership team meetings, staff meetings and retreats

  • Experience and skills
    • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in electoral, organizing and/or advocacy work, with a focus on data, digital and/or other emerging technology
    • Direct experience developing and managing program work, including planning, budgeting, financial management and direct supervision of staff
    • Dynamic training and facilitation skills, including agenda design, curriculum and written resource development
    • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills
    • Demonstrated entrepreneurialism, having imagined and built something new in the world
    • Experience managing program staff

o   Demonstrated ability and interest in raising money from individuals and institutions

o   A great sense of humor – we’re serious about not taking ourselves too seriously

 

Compensation, Benefits, and Background

Compensation for this position is competitive and based on experience, and includes a comprehensive benefits package with health/dental/life/disability insurance, paid time off, retirement benefits, and more. Wellstone Action offers a rewarding and lively working environment. We are based in St. Paul, MN, although this position can be located anywhere in the United States convenient to regular travel.
