This position is responsible for working with the Program Communications team to develop and carry out media strategies to position Earthjustice as an emerging political force in the environmental movement. The position will report to a national communications strategist focused on policy and political work.. This person will pitch stories to national and regional papers, online outlets, and other influential media outlets. They will coordinate closely with Earthjustice’s brand and multimedia teams in Washington and San Francisco to develop new methods of digital storytelling around Earthjustice’s policy work, such as short videos, multimedia graphics, and other forms of content. They will assist the national communications strategist in planning and executing live events on Capitol Hill and throughout D.C. to advance Earthjustice’s political and advocacy goals.

This position is located in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities:

National, Regional and Online Media Relationships (60%):

• Works with National Communications Strategist and communications team, litigators and program staff, and clients and coalition partners to build and shape, communications strategies for a range of environmental issues.
• Coordinates with Regional Communications Strategists to identify regional opportunities for Earthjustice to demonstrate its emerging political capability.
• Writes and distributes informational materials on legislation and policy proposals of interest to national, regional, and web media and Congressional staff.
• Assists with coordination for press events on Capitol Hill and throughout D.C.
• Develops and maintains media lists and contacts and monitors media coverage.
• Proactively searches for opportunities for “quick-hit” digital content (hearing videos, etc.) to highlight Earthjustice issues on Capitol Hill.

Message Development (20%)

• Works with program staff to assess media needs and develop appropriate media message.
• Develops talking points for program staff and prepares staff for media interviews.
• Develops and presents media trainings for partners, clients and staff around the country, as needed and requested.
• Works as needed with local coalitions to strengthen advocacy efforts, assess media needs, develop messaging and media strategy.

Administrative (20%):

• Develops and maintains media lists and contacts and monitors media coverage.
• Manages vendors for communications content (digital ads, photos, etc.)

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or Marketing preferred.
• Three to five years’ experience in reporting or media relations with emphasis on advocacy communication.
  Experience working on environment or social justice causes is preferred.
• Ability to write quickly and effectively for public-facing audiences.
• Experience pitching media and building relationships with journalists.
• Awareness of how social media channels – especially Twitter – can be leveraged to support advocacy goals.
• Demonstrating an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
• Contributing to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.

Salary is based on experience and location.
Salary range in Washington, DC $86,200 - $95,800
