We are hiring a Data and Analytics Director to play an integral role in political campaigns by developing models, collecting election data, analyzing election reports, and identifying and communicating effective campaign strategies. In this position, the Director will be pivotal in winning campaigns and identifying key trends for progressive causes. Work for Progress is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening progressive social change organizations that work for social justice, consumer protections, clean energy, and the environment.
The Director will
provide data so our client organizations can identify key voters, develop the
best messaging to inform voters about the issues, and help progressive
candidates win elections. As more big money flows into campaigns, data analysis
will help us defeat special interests and win elections. The Data and Analytics director will support the
work of clients like Environment America and Fair Share, as well as political
action committees supporting similar issues and policies.
Responsibilities include:
Reporting Analysis
During election seasons (July-November every two years), the Director will:
· Design and produce regular reports as well as ad hoc reports requested by senior management for use in strategic decision-making, informing voter targeting, and managing field programs.
· Provide written and verbal analysis to leadership.
After election season, the Director will:
· Design and produce post hoc analysis of results, including the results of any Network programs.
· Communicate findings with internal and external partners.
Building Tools
· Design tools for use in field programs to gather and analyze data.
· Brainstorm and create tools such as add-ons to vendor software platforms or tools that staff may use directly in the field or in the office. Examples include: an in-house SQL database, survey tools, or tools for field directors to use for turf or staff management.
Testing
· Design and manage regular tests of techniques to improve the efficacy and efficiency of the Network’s field programs. Brainstorm new ideas for tests, such as: messaging to motivate infrequent voters to vote; the efficiency of repeated contacts with infrequent voters; the use of text messaging in turning young people out to vote.
· Seek partnerships with other testing outfits like the Analyst Institute or with nonprofit partners.
Developing Models/Technique
· Design new models using the findings from testing as well as the reports produced to work with field directors.
· Create new techniques for voter persuasion, get out the vote operations, and voter registration.
· Use the modeling to assist other staff with writing field scripts, designing literature, creating manuals, and running staff trainings.
Qualifications:
· Previous experience with one or more campaigns (candidate or independent expenditure) working with data, analytics, or targeting.
· Leadership experience on an electoral campaign preferred.
· Proficiency in mathematics, statistics, and/or social science research. Commitment to advancing one’s abilities in statistics and social science.
· Proficiency in at least one of the following computer programming languages: SQL, Python, R.
· Fluency working with NGP VAN voter contact tools.
· Good communication ability: Must have ability to translate mathematical concepts into real-world narratives for campaign leadership, and be able to advise on management decisions and strategic choices for campaigns.
· Creative: must be able to envision new approaches to using data to understand the world.
· Organized: candidate needs stay on top of numerous projects in a fast-paced environment.
