General Statement of Duties: The Member Leadership in Action (MLA)/Education Director will be responsible for building a program of sustained staff and member leader development across our Local. This will include traditional educational curriculum and material development, but will also include maximizing development opportunities in all facets of our work. The MLA/Education Director will work with Directors, and other staff, to build a culture and program dedicated to member development based on the iron rule of organizing: “Do not do for others what they can do themselves” and driven by a willingness to innovate, experiment, take risks, and work in a goals-driven and accountable environment.

MLA/Education Director Duties include:

  • Develops and drives an MLA plan that moves the local's strategic plan and integrates with national and division strategic goals
    • This will include identifying gaps in the Local's training/educational offerings and development of curriculum and materials to fill those gaps
  • Primary responsibility to ensure a program for staff development related to MLA is implemented
  • Concentrating on leadership identification and development
  • Foster an environment of development that focuses on cross divisional engagement
  • Designs and leads MLA programs to engage members and develop leaders to their highest capacity, at every level of the union
  • Works with Directors and other staff to incorporate MLA goals and program into all facets of the Local's work and will report to the President or their designee
  • Ensures that staff and members get training that supports strategic programmatic goals.
  • Manages a system that supports follow through and accountability; including developing goals and metrics to measure the program's progress:
  • Ensures that the new skills/practices taught in trainings get implemented
  • Monitors/evaluates ongoing implementation of MLA plan and progress toward goals
  • Ensures that MLA participation is being tracked

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in labor movement work and ability to supervise other staff.
  • Experience in leader identification, recruitment, and development
  • Bi-Lingual ability to speak and write in English and Spanish is required.
  • Educational/training experience with working people or a related degree
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; including listening
  • Commitment to the labor movement and a strong work ethic.
  • Functions with a high level of integrity, transparency, and ability to give and receive feedback.
  • Candidates should have strong emotional intelligence and a commitment to their own growth and development—and of others.
  • Strong judgment, including in highly complex situations
