ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a member lead organization comprised of low-income people building power in New York City and State to improve the lives of our families and communities. Since its first meeting in 1994 with 80 people in attendance, Community Voices Heard was established and would eventually become one of the leading organizations working for economic justice in the country.
Community Voices Heard (CVH) believes that we must build the power of low-income people and people of color, particularly women, by developing an organization that they control and lead. We also believe we have a successful model that has and can continue to mobilize large numbers of low-income people and people of color to DEVELOP into community leaders,PARTICIPATE in the policy making process, WIN concrete policies that improve our members’ lives, and CREATE a more fair and equitable community for everyone.
ELECTION & PROJECT BACKGROUND
CVH has a history of doing non-partisan voter engagement efforts in the community, but the upcoming elections, with an empahise on our local and state elections are going to shape the direction New York State goes in. We’ve been motivated by the recent visable support in the federal elections for a change in how government does business, but we know the real impact starts at home and so it’s important to take our efforts up a notch in this year's election – with such big stakes at hand – and getting to a different scale, of both numerical contacts and volunteer engagement. We are looking to get large numbers of eligible voters excited and engaged in one of the oldest forms of participatory democracy- voting. We also want to empower people – both people off our lists and new people – to be engaged in the voter project, learning the skills of: canvassing, phone banking, electoral strategy, and more.
