Job Announcement: Communications Director (Washington, DC)

 

 

The National Security Network (NSN) is accepting applications now for a Communications Director, with interviews to be scheduled as soon as possible.

 

NSN is the political arm of the progressive national security community.  NSN promotes a pragmatic and principled foreign policy to ensure a secure and prosperous future for the United States.  We work with a broad network of experts, political and opinion leaders to 1) identify, develop, and synthesize the best policy ideas and solutions; 2) translate those ideas into effective factual and thematic messages that will resonate with a broad audience; and 3) distribute its message to elected officials, progressive political candidates, the media, national security experts, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations.

 

Position: Communications Director

 

The Communications Director will lead rapid response, media outreach and long term strategic communications for the organization, working closely with the staff and NSN's broad network of experts to promote the organization's policy objectives and profile in national and local media, online, and with the political community in Washington, DC. 

 

Duties:

 

·         Design, develop, and manage a proactive, strategic communications program that shapes the national security narrative on both short and long term issues through the deployment of NSN staff, NSN expert surrogates, and NSN policy materials.

 

·         Lead NSN's rapid response on breaking national security issues to help promote the progressive national security narrative and to drive news coverage.

 

·         Network with advocacy, policy and political communications professionals to build campaigns and promote shared messages on key issue priorities and political developments.

 

·         Handle daily communications needs of the organization including: building NSN's brand through targeted promotion; drafting and distributing press releases, advisories, op-eds, talking points; maintaining relationships with reporters, pundits, producers and other members of the media; and partnering with the policy team to produce the NSN Daily Update.

 

Experience:

 

·         Minimum three years press and/or communications experience.

·         Established experience working with reporters and media outlets, bloggers, and other new media on national security and/or political issues.

·         Familiarity with national security and foreign policy issues, Congress, and the Executive Branch.

·         Strong written and oral communication skills.

·         Team-oriented, with an ability to work independently in a fast paced office while maintaining a sense of humor.
