About The Atlas Project

The Atlas Project is committed to building the institutional memory of the progressive movement. Our mission is to arm the progressive community with historical elections data, sophisticated analysis, and real time information for all 50 states. We provide political campaigns and progressive organizations with a baseline set of information to work from – helping them learn from the past to ensure more progressive victories in the future.

 

Data Fellow

This fellowship will give applicants that who have an interest in both technology and politics an opportunity to gain experience supporting progressive organizations involved in competitive races across the country. The Atlas Project’s Data Fellows assist our Data and Targeting Team in collecting and compiling data used in the Atlas Project’s strategic, high-level political research and our groundbreaking online toolkit/data visualization tools. Data Fellows will also have an opportunity to see how data-driven decisions are made by organizations involved in progressive politics.

 

Responsibilities:
  • Compile and standardize information from various sources for the online toolkit, including but not limited to polling data, election results, campaign finance data, census data, media spending, and vote history data
  • Learn SQL to query Atlas’ MySQL databases
  • Audit previously collected datasets for accuracy or changes
  • Learn how to query the voter file to answer questions posed by researchers
  • Analyze and compile political data for use in presentations and memos
  • Use cutting-edge tools to create data visualizations such as maps, charts, & graphs for reports and on the web
  • Contribute to online analysis and content
Qualifications:
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office with a strong emphasis on Excel
  • Some experience with internet research or large public datasets
  • Experience with (or interest in) databases and data structures (Access, MySQL)
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of our fast-paced team
Please note the fellowship requires a commitment of 35 hours/week. A monthly stipend is available. The ideal candidate will be able to commit to the fellowship for at least three months with the possibility of an extension.
