Communications  Director/Press Secretary

WAmend is a grassroots coalition working to pass I-735, calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn a series of anti-democratic Supreme Court decisions equating the spending of money with free speech and giving the birthrights of We the People to artificial entities. It will be a 2016 general election ballot measure.

The Communications Director is in charge of developing and monitoring the campaign’s interactions with the media.  He/She will build on existing relationships with the press as key spokesperson to set up interviews and identify media opportunities for the campaign.  She/He will help write and develop campaign materials.

The Communications Director will be a good writer able to speak effectively and on message to varied audiences.  She/He will be a pro-active thinker and strategist.  We seek a highly motivated and politically knowledgeable individual. 

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

o   Field and respond to all media inquiries and oversee comprehensive media tracking programs

o   Generate earned media coverage of the I-735 message through pro-active planning and rapid response

o   Write press releases, statements, media advisories, talking points, columns, remarks, and boiler plate

o   Perform pro-active media outreach, maintain good working relationships with journalists, and generate positive media coverage

o   Secure buy-in and maintain message discipline from volunteers on our public message and themes

Qualifications Required:                               

·       Experience in communications role for candidate or ballot measure campaigns or for a high profile non-profit

·       Exceptional oral and written communications skills, including consistent on the record success

·       Track progress of success in a fast paced, high stakes environment

·       Demonstrated ability to work constructively with coworkers, volunteers and interns

Priority consideration will be given to applicants with:

1.     Knowledge of issues behind I-735’s campaign

2.     Proven ability to message effectively across the political spectrum

3.     A network of media contacts within the state of Washington

4.     Graphic design skills
