The
Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit
health-advocacy group based in Washington, DC, that focuses on protecting the
public from diet-related health problems.
CSPI publishes Nutrition Action
Healthletter, the nation’s largest‑circulation health newsletter, and has
led efforts that resulted in healthier diets, more-nutritious school foods, safer
foods, and more honest food labeling.
CSPI provides objective information to the public and represents
citizens’ interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies. CSPI is supported largely by subscribers to Nutrition Action Healthletter, individual
donors, and foundation grants.
This position helps spread
CSPI’s message communicating with its supporters and the public via email,
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and other social media. Reporting to the Director of Communications,
the Manager of Online Communications works collaboratively across the
organization to advance its public policy objectives and inform the public.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement
plans for growing CSPI’s email list.
- Increase CSPI’s
presence on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.
- Compose copy and
design graphics for social media with an eye toward maximizing reach.
- Identify and
cultivate ongoing relationships with top bloggers and social media
influencers.
- Use metrics to
determine the effectiveness of various uses of social media.
- Help CSPI’s program
staff use our email network and social media effectively.
- Coordinate the
organization’s email advocacy program, including schedule outbound alerts
in Engaging Networks, and assist program staff with maximizing open- and
click-through rates.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (communications,
public relations, or journalism degree preferred), and two to four years
of experience using social media in an advocacy setting.
- Excellent written and
verbal communications skills.
- Strong proofreading
skills.
- Excellent
organizational skills, attention to detail, an ability to adapt to
changing priorities in a news-driven atmosphere.
- Prior experience in
communications, public relations, or issue advocacy is highly desirable.
- Expertise with
Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and social media marketing.
- Excellent computer
skills, including proficiency in MS Office; CRM applications such as
Convio or (preferably) Engaging Networks; Drupal or other content
management systems; Photoshop and other photo and video editing software.
- Experience in using
statistics to measure effectiveness of initiatives.
- Ability to work both independently
and with supervision.
- Interest in nutrition,
food safety, or health issues and public interest commitment.
