Chief Operating Officer at WorkMoney (remote)

Reporting to: CEO

Compensation: $100-$200k

To apply: email tal...@workmoney.org (see below)

How many of these thoughts have you had in the past month?

  1. "Wish I were having more impact on the world."

  2. "Hm, [fill in the blank] is a problem. I'll fix it!"

  3. “Whose ass must I kick to get that project moving?”

  4. "Our economy really ain't working for everyone."

If the answer is all four, apply for this job.

WorkMoney is a startup advocacy organization focused on improving the financial security of our members -- everyday, working Americans. Founded in early 2020, WorkMoney is well-funded, strongly independent, and politically savvy. We've already built a membership of over 1.5 million people and have had a major impact in that short period of time. We fight for commonsense policies that benefit working Americans, like COVID stimulus checks, and then educate our members on how to get what they're owed.

We are looking for our first Chief Operating Officer, to help us scale to a national powerhouse and household name. You will have a wide portfolio and a great deal of organizational responsibility, in areas like Operations, Finance, HR, Strategic Planning, Legal, Compliance and much more. It's hard to predict all your tasks; in a startup like WorkMoney, your priorities will change and grow with the organization. You'll be the "fixer" -- the person who volunteers to run at unexpected organizational hurdles and head off problems before they start. No two Mondays will be the same.

You may notice a very wide range in this job’s salary and experience level. So let’s be transparent: We’re a startup, and we’re not sure what we need. The ambitious whipper-snapper who wants to take on the world, or the seasoned veteran who has been around the block? Either archetype -- or something in between -- could work for this role. If you interview, we’ll have an up-front conversation about where you fit on that spectrum. (And if that kind of uncertainty makes you nervous, this isn’t the right role for you.)

In exchange for your flexibility and initiative, you'll gain an enormous range of skills and experience, applicable to both the nonprofit / advocacy and the tech / startup worlds. You'll emerge knowing how to run a complex, dynamic, growing organization. You'll build a wide set of relationships in tech, and on the national political scene. Reporting directly to the CEO, you'll make top-level decisions. You'll earn good money.

And perhaps most importantly, you'll have an answer to the little voice inside your head that asks, "How can I change the world today?" WorkMoney's model is new and exciting: a twist on digital-age advocacy, which is already having more impact than old models. (Ask us about it if you interview.) But you don't need to be a nonprofit or advocacy expert to succeed in this role. Applicants from corporate or startup backgrounds will have as much (or more) to give in this role. Maybe 2020 stirred your conscience, and you realize it's time to apply your hard-earned for-profit experience to social change?

  • Strategic Plan: Translate strategic goals into concrete execution plans for growth and impact

  • HR & Recruiting: Find, recruit and retain world-class staff; performance management, org structure, team process and policies, culture/norms

  • Operations: evolve internal systems for a growing staff, track growth and performance, keep the lights on

  • Legal & Compliance: strategic decisions about organizational structures, government and regulatory reporting, manage lawyers

  • Project Management & Accountability: Move organization-wide projects quickly and efficiently, including holding peers and superiors to deadlines

  • Tools & Vendors: manage internal tools/systems and the vendors who supply them

  • Everything Else: Proactively lean into new opportunities and tackle new challenges that arise; when no one else is the expert, you become the expert

  • You will start with a team of one direct report (Operations Manager) and multiple contractors (bookkeeper, compliance officer, lawyers, etc)

Requirements & Skills

  • 10+ year experience in operations, administration or similar

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent

  • Private sector backgrounds encouraged

  • Experience managing organizational growth

  • Experience managing teams, hiring & firing

  • Clear & concise written, verbal and presentation skills

  • Unflappable personality; a "grown-up in the room"

  • Proactive project management; unafraid of holding peers / managers accountable

  • Not afraid of details, but can weigh in on big picture strategy

  • Passion for (though not necessarily expertise in) issues facing working Americans

  • Above all, the belief that no problem can't be solved ... and the get-go to try

To Apply

Send an email to tal...@workmoney.org with your resume attached or LinkedIn profile. Don’t send a standard cover letter; we won’t read it. Instead, briefly answer these four questions in the body of the email:

1) What’s the largest team you’ve managed, and where;

2) What’s the largest budget you’ve managed, and where;

3) What’s the last project you had fun tackling (at work);

4) In one sentence, why are you a great candidate for this job?
