SUMMARY:
NextGen America is seeking passionate and hardworking candidates to join our youth organizing program in North Carolina, working to engage young people in local and national fights to prevent climate disaster and promote prosperity for all Americans.
In North Carolina, this program is focused on organizing young people in targeted cities, regions, and campuses to be more politically active. Our work engages young voters in the state legislative process, in actions to hold federal and local office-holders accountable, in voter registration efforts, and build towards a massive 2018 electoral program. Our 2018 electoral program includes traditional electoral organizing tactics such as door knocking, phone banking, peer-to-peer text banking, and more.
The Media Manager will work alongside the North Carolina leadership team to help with our communications work on the ground, including working with the in-state press (with a focus on campus-based press), helping manage our social media channels, and working with the San Francisco-based press team on larger press events and narratives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Own the state-based social media properties for the NextGen team and promote organizing efforts on social media
- Work with National Social Media Manager to draft social copy and develop best practices
- Be responsible for collecting statewide multimedia content including pictures, video, written testimonials, etc.
- Work with San Francisco-based digital content team to develop state digital calendar including email, social media, and texting
- Train and coach in-state staff on digital organizing best practices including social media, texting, and email campaigning
- Train students and organizers to be spokespeople
- Serve as the main point of contact with campus-based reporters and media outlets
- Work with the San Francisco-based communications team to pitch in-state reporters on our activities to earn media coverage
- Help with press advance, including logistics and building of in-state press events
- Coordinate logistics of interviews and press requests for our primary in-state spokesperson, the State Youth Director
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive applications
- Passion for taking political action to fight climate change, transition our country to clean energy, and stand up for progressive values and causes
- Strong desire to obtain new skills and take risks to achieve our shared goals
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines
- Excellent team player, creative, and flexible
- Experience or exposure to state or national email programs
- Experience using CMS is a plus
- A minimum of 1-2 years experience in communication, digital, or organizing field
- Ability to travel and work flexible hours
