Baltimore City Environmental Justice and Zero Waste Organizer
Energy
Justice Network (
www.energyjustice.net) supports grassroots organizing
to stop dirty energy and waste industry facilities throughout the
country and beyond. In Baltimore, we’ve been supporting the work of the
local youth organizing to stop the nation’s largest waste incinerator
from being built in the city. This organizing position will focus on
supporting that struggle, while moving Baltimore toward a zero waste
goal and away from reliance on the existing large trash incinerator,
which is the city’s biggest polluter.
Responsibilities
The
organizer is expected to demonstrate outstanding initiative and
leadership skills to move Baltimore City in bold new directions on waste
management policy. They will build community and local political
support for moving Baltimore away from incineration and toward policies
that spur the creation of local zero waste jobs in reuse, recycling and
composting. This includes a variety of activities including
representing Energy Justice Network with city leaders, local
organizational allies and the general public, public speaking, social
media outreach, assisting with research, messaging, policy development
and more.
EXPERIENCE:
* At least three years of
successful experience in campaign coordination and/or community
organizing with a community-based organization, a people’s movement
organization, environmental justice organization, or environmental
organization.
* Demonstrated skill in analyzing political, environmental, and social trends in the region, and developing campaigns.
* Proven track record in uniting diverse opinions and teams around a common agenda and plan.
SKILLS:
* High computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email filters).
* Social media outreach.
* Excellent networking skills.
*
Strong writing and public speaking skills, with an ability to simplify
messages and communicate complex issues to the public.
ABILITIES:
* Attention to detail.
* Strategic thinker, systematic and goal-oriented.
* Strong inter-personal communication and listening skills.
* Work well in a team and independently.
* Self-motived with lots of initiative.
*
A commitment to Energy Justice Network’s mission and core values,
including a passion for environmental justice and grassroots social
change.
PLUSES:
* Already networked into the
African-American community in Baltimore, or has experience organizing in
African-American communities, elsewhere.
* Experience with anti-oppression trainings, or experience organizing in multi-cultural and diverse settings.
* Familiarity with environmental justice principles and practices, and working with frontline communities and grassroots groups.
* Experience with waste, pollution, and climate issues.
* Facilitation skills.
* Car and valid driver’s license.
LOCATION: Must be located in Baltimore City, Maryland, USA. The organizer will report to the Executive Director in Washington, DC.
COMPENSATION: This is a full time position that is funded for one year at $30,000 plus health care benefits.

Prince George’s County Environmental Justice and Zero Waste Organizer

working to stop plans by the county for a new trash incinerator in Upper
Marlboro, while supporting plans to move the county toward zero waste
goals.
Responsibilities
The organizer is expected
to demonstrate outstanding initiative and leadership skills to move
Prince George’s County in bold new directions on waste management
policy. They will build community and local political support for
moving the county away from incineration and toward policies that spur
the creation of local zero waste jobs in reuse, recycling and
composting. This includes a variety of activities including
