WHO WE ARE: 

 

SEIU 721 is a dynamic and fast growing labor organization recognized as one of the largest and strongest unions of publicly funded employees in the nation. We represent over 85,000 members and have over 200 staff employees covering 6 counties in Southern California, including Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties and numerous cities in these regions. Our members provide public services in diverse fields, including health care, social services, special districts, private non-profits, libraries, courts, parks and recreation, public works and mental health. They care for the sick, protect the quality of the drinking water, keep records in the courts, administer benefits for poor people, maintain the libraries, help run the jails, protect our communities' most vulnerable members, maintain the streets, work with parolees, groom and maintain the beaches, and provide many other services to keep counties and cities running.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Supervises the Accounting staff in conjunction with assistance from the Director of Administration.
  • Manages or oversees the relationship with independent auditors and coordinates all audit activities.
  • Directs accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Consistently analyzes financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitors progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of SEIU 721 financial status;
  • Assists SEIU 721’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administers and reviews all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Supports the President/Executive Director in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with budgets.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the senior leadership; continuously collaborate with senior leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
  • Leverage strengths of the current accounting team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

SKILLS, APTITUDE, AND COMMITMENT:                                                                                               

  • 7-10 years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
  • 3-5 years supervisory experience required
  • Minimum of a BA; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Experience in a complex union environment preferred.
  • Must possess strong knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, and MAS 90 Accounting software
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to SEIU 721’s mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own the responsibility for finance/accounting
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including accounting and non-accounting managers
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to make effective use of resources available to the union.
  • Dedication to improving the position of working people and strengthening the role of organized labor through work actions, community relations, and legislative and political activity.
  • Ability to work effectively with members and staff from diverse ethnic, social, and economic groups.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.
  • Local candidates preferred, relocation not provided

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

  • Salary is commensurate based on experience.
