NDWA, Care in Action, and Caring Across Generations seek a
State Director in Michigan to build a strong statewide organizing campaign. The State Director will supervise the day-to-day operations of our state-based 501(c)3 civic engagement work and 501(c)4 advocacy and electoral work. They will manage the hiring and coordination of staff, manage the state budget, and coordinate with statewide tables and groups. They will grow the Michigan Caring Majority to move key policy goals in 2021 and beyond.
Our civic engagement program will include field/organizing, communications, digital, data, and leadership development programs, and our advocacy/electoral work will include legislative engagement/advocacy, direct voter contact, candidate endorsement, and political power-building. The Michigan State Director will oversee the success of this work, serving as chief architect of our state-based organizing work.
This position will report to Care in Action’s Managing Director, but will also work very closely with NDWA as well as Caring Across Generations’ Director of Organizing and Field.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Create a powerful electoral organizing operation, including volunteer and paid voter contact, focused on activating and mobilizing women of color
- Implement a statewide voter registration campaign focused on unregistered voters of color
- Build deeply with Michigan Caring Majority coalition to move legislative campaign work forward
- Expand Michigan Caring Majority coalition to new partners across the state
- Integrate seamlessly with existing in-state partners, focused on base building work of domestic workers, caregivers, and women of color, including successfully expanding the project to targeted areas
- Continue to build a powerful coalition of care workers, caregivers, and those who receive care in order to deepen the work of the Michigan Caring Majority
- Oversee a candidate endorsement process by identifying, vetting, and supporting prospective and endorsed candidates
- Hire relevant staff and potentially consultants, including a paid voter contact operation
- Serve as a representative at appropriate meetings and tables, coordinating closely with our partners across the state
- Coordinate closely with NDWA and Caring Across Generations field and communications staff, and Care in Action’s digital and communications staff
- Support and shape the message of our statewide campaign, including serving as organizational spokesperson, with support of communications staff
- Lead experimentation and innovation work around electoral organizing, and analyze and report on results
- Lead strategy and execution around legislative campaigns
Qualifications:
- 3-4 cycles of electoral campaign experience with increasing responsibility
- Expertise in electoral voter contact, including paid canvass, voter registration, volunteer management, and phone banking
- Deep knowledge of Michigan and political organizing
- Commitment to support Black organizing and civic engagement, including following the leadership of Black women
- Ability to forge strong relationships with relevant partners, groups, and leaders across the state
- Managing coalitions to move shared policy agenda
- Willingness to work long and unusual hours, including nights and weekends
- Willingness to travel when travel is safe (reliable access to a vehicle is required once travel is deemed to be safe)
- Strong understanding of messaging and communication for electoral campaigns; relationships with relevant media are a bonus
- Work closely with the national Care in Action and Caring Across Generations staff and attorneys
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess threats and recommend actionable solutions
- Relentless drive, tenacity and a willingness to do whatever it takes to advance our mission and values
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage the technical aspects of a project such as compliance, deadlines, reporting, etc.
- Ability to work effectively with strong personalities, peers, public officials, and allies
- Experience running data-driven, digital-first campaigns strongly preferred
- Proficiency in Spanish or Arabic considered a major plus
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary: $60k - $90k with full benefits package, commensurate with experience
Work Location: Remote, but based in Michigan
