We are seeking passionate, progressive Democrats who want to help elected Scott Stringer the next mayor of New York City!
For the last seven years as City Comptroller — and, before that, as a leading progressive in the New York State Assembly and as Manhattan Borough President — Scott Stringer has been a strong and consistent voice for a city for everyone: housing that middle- and low-income New Yorkers can afford… quality public education and city-backed childcare... fully funded higher education, mass transit, and public housing systems... and criminal justice and police reform to end police violence and mass incarceration.
Now Scott Stringer is a leading candidate to become New York City’s next mayor, and he is building a people-powered campaign to organize every community in the city.
About the Role: The Press Assistant will work on all aspects of the campaign's press operation — from writing media advisories, press releases, and statements, to engaging with and responding to reporters, to planning and executing public events. This is a role that requires quick thinking, great writing, and true multi-tasking ability. Candidates should have experience working in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments and should be skilled in quickly producing clean, creative, and targeted written copy. This is an ideal opportunity for an accomplished self-starter who can think fast and write well under time constraints, plan strategically, handle a myriad of challenging responsibilities, and engage on a wide range of policy issues. The Press Assistant will report directly to the Press Secretary.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Draft media advisories, press releases, and public statements
• Respond to press inquiries in coordination with other members of the campaign team
• Pitch story ideas to neighborhood-based media outlets in all five boroughs
• Initiate and sustain relationships with city and state electronic, print, television and radio media reporters and outlets
• Closely monitor coverage of city, state and national issues relevant to the campaign
Qualifications and Skills:
• A BA/BS degree from an accredited college, plus 2 years of full-time paid experience in public relations, journalism, speechwriting or advertising, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
• Strong writing skills. Three writing samples are to be submitted with the application.
Compensation and Benefits:
$4,000/month, and benefits include health insurance. Position is full-time and reports directly to the Press Secretary.
Ideal candidates will have a proven track record operating collaboratively in fast-paced campaign environments.
We are looking for individuals who live their progressive values, and act with kindness and respect toward all.
We are committed to equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, and we strongly encourage people from historically underrepresented groups to apply.
