Job Opening: Environmental Justice Organizer

About ACTION United:  is Pennsylvania’s largest community based organization, with 54,000 members and 10 community chapters statewide.  ACTION United members work on issues in their local chapters, and also citywide and statewide.  ACTION United members have won countless improvements in their neighborhoods.  In Philadelphia we’ve won Paid Sick Days, stopped the planned closure of 13 public schools and won a commitment from Mayor Kenney to create 25 community schools in Philadelphia.  In Pittsburgh, our members have recently organized tenants to win money and relocation assistance for the building their owner is selling and are active in fighting to end the school to prison pipeline.

About the Environmental Justice Campaign: There are a number of pieces to this campaign.  One piece is organizing frontline communities around the largest East Coast Oil refinery in South Philly to stop the expansion of dirty fossil fuel infrastructure in the city.  Plans being developed by the refinery owners have Philly building out its nineteenth century, dirty energy economy for a few new jobs and tremendous public health costs.  The organizer will work to  low income/African American communities in Philly/Southeast PA to build a powerful voice for an economy that does poison us and produces good jobs.  Our communities are on the front lines and under attack by big polluters prioritizing profits over people. The organizer will work with people to stop the expansion of dirty energy production in Philadelphia and to fight for and demand that our city and its leaders move us rapidly toward a new, green economy that provides family sustaining jobs.

A second piece of the work involves state efforts to shape the PA Clean Power Plan.  The President’s plan requires states to develop their plans to reduce Carbon emissions.  ACTION United is at the table to insure that the interests of frontline and of color communities are represented in this plan.

Requirements:   the commitment to do the work it takes to bring people together and build a powerful voice for environmental justice.  Good people skills and a commitment to social and economic justice.  Position starts in July 2016.

Pay/Benefits:  Starting salary is $30K, with credit given for other organizing experience.   Health insurance, 401k, paid vacations and holidays, transportation reimbursement, extensive on the job training, national networking, and statewide training are part of the employment package.

Location: this position will be based out of the ACTION United office at 846 N. Broad St., Philadelphia.
