Community Organizer for the Fight for $15 and a Union Campaign

SEIU National Fast Food Workers Union is hiring a full-time Community Organizer in North Carolina. We seek an individual who is interested in a career fighting alongside low wage workers who are leading the campaign to win “$15 and a Union”.

About SEIU NFFWU

SEIU NFFWU is working to expand the movement and deepen the successful fights to raise employment standards and unite workers in organizing their union in the fast food industry through national, state and community campaigns.

SEIU NFFWU is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which has more than 2 million members in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. NFFWU is united with those 2.2 million members in a shared belief in the dignity of workers and the value of their work, and in a commitment to a more just and humane society.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinates outreach, recruitment, and the engagement of coalition partners.

• Develops functioning coalitions with supporters and allies.

• Builds community, political, and religious support for organizing projects and political or issue campaigns.

• Plans and executes large scale mobilizations including demonstrations under the direction of the city coordinator.

• Plans and executes media events including press conferences, actions, etc. under the direction of the city coordinator.

• Writes newsletters, leaflets, editorials and other literature to support the campaign.

• Performs other duties as required to support the union and its mission especially as it relates to organizing.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or equivalent, some college preferred and at least 2 -4 years of community or political organizing experience and / or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Knowledge of labor, political or community organizing.
• Knowledge of unions and their political and organizing strategies and campaigns.
• Knowledge of legislative processes.
• A commitment to economic and racial justice, and the labor movement
• Ability to train, lead, represent and motivate workers for successful results.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to plan and implement strategic legislative, electoral or community support campaigns.
• Ability to carry-out goals and meet deadlines.
• Ability to establish and maintain good community, political and union leader relationships.
• Skill in the use of personal computer to develop reports, leaflets, brochures and other written materials.

Physical Requirements:

The position is based in the Raleigh Durham metropolitan areas. Work is generally performed from a field office setting or other location to complete the required assignments of the position. Long and extended hours and a minimal amount of overnight travel may be required. The position includes a competitive salary based on experience and a package of benefits that includes paid holidays, vacations, 401K and fully paid health benefits, including health, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits.
