SENIOR FIELD RESEARCHER - HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPAIGN Grade III
This position can be based in Boston, MA; New York,NY or Los Angeles, CA.
Purpose: To represent and assist the International Union in field research; coordinate campaign research, utilizing information from and about workers, employers, economic / financial research on target or industry; ability to act in a leadership role with other staff (International and Local); ability to identify other campaign issues and research them.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Field Researcher plays an integral role in planning, implementation, and evaluation of campaign and participates in team leadership of campaign. The Senior Field Researcher performs a wide range of duties related to the research area of organizing and/or contract campaigns as assigned by the International Union and these may include some or all of the duties and responsibilities included within the field researcher job description. These job areas may include, but are not limited to the following:
Organizing, bargaining, communications, division program support, public policy action, community support, resource management, record keeping, employer research, economic research and other areas. In addition, the Senior Field Researcher will routinely be assigned one or more of the following types of responsibilities:
A. Industry Research
B. Corporate Research
C. Strategic and Programmatic Thinking
D. Legal Research and Strategy
E. Project Management
Qualifications: The Senior Field Researcher position requires a high level of judgement, leadership, and commitment to the goals of SEIU and its leaders. The Senior Field Researcher must be able to work independently with elected leaders in complex political and local union situations.
Working Conditions: The Senior Field Researcher must be available for regular travel over a large geographic area--and the position often requires temporary assignments away from home as well as long and irregular hours.
Scope and Nature of Supervision: Senior field Researcher must be able to act and organize their time extremely independently while maintaining a close relationship of responsibility to the International Union. Organizing campaign supervision to establish workplans that reflect campaign objectives is exercised by the campaign lead (e.g. Organizing Coordinator). Technical work supervision provided by the Research Department. Field Research is closely coordinated with Headquarters research teams.
Criteria for Evaluation: The Senior Field Researcher will be evaluated on their ability and skill in coordinating and developing research strategy for major campaigns which enable SEIU to meet its goals of organizing and representing workers successfully. Among other criteria they will be evaluated on their ability to maintain and enhance working relationships between local union leaders and the International, balance conflicting demands successfully, lead staff, to provide research services in a broad range of areas, to analyze and report both successful and less successful campaigns, as well as carry out assigned and required tasks in a competent and professional manner in keeping with SEIU's overall goals and expectations.
