Description: Office of NY State Senator Brian Kavanagh seeks a Legislative Director
Responsibilities: The Legislative Director will develop and manage an ambitious, progressive legislative and policy agenda in collaboration with the State Senator, staff colleagues, other elected and government officials, constituents, and advocacy organizations. Responsibilities include: researching legislative and policy issues; drafting and advancing bills through the legislative process; representing the State Senator in meetings and at public events; developing and pursuing legislative and advocacy strategies; and coordinating with allies in and out of government. Topics of particular interest include gun violence prevention, consumer protection, housing, environmental protection, election law, governmental and political reform, and economic and social justice. Extensive travel to Albany is required during the January-June legislative session.
Qualification: College degree and significant experience with public policy in or out of government are required. Experience working with legislation, familiarity with New York government and politics, and/or JD or other relevant degree strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to public service, excellent oral and written communication and analytical skills, good judgement, political sensitivity, and a willingness to work long hours as necessary and some weekends in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
