AAPI Community Engagement Organizer Job Description

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party is hiring a full-time Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community Engagement organizer for the 2020 cycle. The AAPI Community Engagement Organizer will report directly to the Political Program Director. This position is based in St.Paul, Minnesota but the organizer will spend much of their time in the field. 

The AAPI Community Engagement Organizer will work closely with grassroots community leaders, local elected officials, and partner organizations to empower, engage and mobilize AAPI Minnesotans election with a particular emphasis on Minnesota’s Hmong community.  The ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker with ties to Minnesota’s AAPI communities and experience organizing in an electoral context. The person in this position must not only be a strategic planner but must be willing to work side by side with volunteers to execute grassroots strategies in the field.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and manage volunteer doorknock and phone call teams in the Minnesota’s AAPI communities.
  • Identify and partner with grasstops leaders and organizations across the state to anticipate needs, provide resources and engage their communities.
  • Collaborate with the DFL voter protection and field teams to break down barriers to participation and meet registration, volunteer and turnout goals.
  • Work with Political Director to achieve tangible, metric-driven short term goals in the service of increasing long-term participation.
  • Plan and staff relational organizing events.
  • Represent the DFL at community events.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Supervisor, Executive Director, or DFL Chair.

Requirements:

  • Experience organizing in or deep ties to an AAPI communities in Minnesota
  • At least one cycle of relevant experience as a field organizer or super volunteer
  • Demonstrated commitment to electing DFL candidates up and down the ballot 
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle
  • Ability to work long or irregular hours

 Preferred but not required:

  • Minnesota experience or ties to the state 
  • Experience with relational organizing tools or programs
  • Experience coaching or managing other staff
  • Knowledge and experience using Votebuilder (VAN)

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. Employees of the DFL are paid on a bi-weekly basis and receive a competitive benefits package including health care and dental.
