This is a great opportunity to work with an amazing team of community and labor organizers in the Boston area. Granted I'm a bit biased, as I've had the privilege to work here for the last two years...but it's the perfect fit for an experienced communications/PR/journalism professional looking to take their game to the next level in a major media market. Competitive pay and benefits, plus a fun and flexible work environment.

Happy to answer any questions folks may have. Feel free to email me.

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR WANTED FOR BOSTON-BASED PROGRESSIVE COMMUNITY-LABOR COALITION

WHO WE ARE

MASSUNITING is a Boston-based coalition of worker advocates, community groups and faith organizations united in the fight for good jobs, corporate accountability and strong communities. Through aggressive organizing campaigns that combine media outreach, strategic research and in-the-streets action, our partners are leading the way in local and statewide efforts to raise wages, protect vital services, and promote progressive policy solutions.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

MASSUNITING seeks an experienced leader with strong oral and written communications skills to join our team as a Communications Director. This senior staff position will lead the communications team in strategic planning, message development, and traditional media outreach efforts. The successful candidate will also provide direct support to MassUniting coalition partners and related campaigns on an as-needed basis.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

·      Execute earned and paid media plans for the coalition and labor/community partners

·      Develop effective messaging and promote message discipline among allied organizations

·      Manage media relations in coordination with community coalition spokespeople – from message concept to journalist pitches

·      Identify and develop spokespeople for public speaking, including media interviews

·      Write campaign talking points, speeches and press materials

·      Produce campaign visuals – including leaflets, direct mail, posters and banners

·      Work with New Media staff to create consistent web and social media content, along with related photo and video needs

·      Work with preferred vendors to produce print, radio and television advertising, as needed

REQUIREMENTS

This is a senior-level position that requires five or more years of experience directing or supporting communications programs in a campaign/advocacy, union or newsroom setting. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to craft effective general public messaging from complex and often-abstract background material and research. Candidates must have experience pitching editors and journalists, with demonstrable success in placing and influencing stories across multiple mediums. Strong writing, verbal and analytical skills are key.

Familiarity with basic graphic design, photo or video production techniques desired. Journalism background, spokesperson training or staff/vendor management experience a plus. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is generally performed in an office setting, but job may require work in the field or in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. This is a fast-paced work environment that requires long and irregular hours.

HOW TO APPLY

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, résumé and three samples of writing or design work to jo...@massuniting.org – including at least one example of a media advisory, press release or related media pitch.  Samples of successful story placement a plus.

MASSUNITING is an equal opportunity employer with a commitment to diversity – women, people of color and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. No phone calls please.
