Weekly updates from and about our member community

Happy Eid al-Fitr to our Muslim friends. What a trying week it’s been! From the neverending mourning from school shootings across the country to the dodging of accountability for spreading election misinformation by right-wing news outlets, there’s been a lot of bad news in the world, and it can easily become overwhelming. As a nation, we’ve learned that thoughts and prayers alone will not create the change we need in this country.

Inaction is a form of oppression, and many of us are searching for ways to put our boots on the ground in our respective states & regions and join the fight.  Lawmakers like Tennessee Reps. Justin Pearson & Justin Jones are inspiring as they continue to be defiant and speak truth to power in the face of inequity. I am also inspired by the thousands of students from Staley High School who walked out in protest of the shooting of their classmate, Ralph Yarl.

Lin Yutang once said, “Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence.” The path to a better, more inclusive, & more equitable America is uncharted, but if we all keep walking, it is possible.

During difficult times like these, I am glad that GAIN Power exists to share and connect progressive changemakers to people, organizations, and opportunities creating positive change in our society.

A big part of why we launched the Powerful IDEA Awards is to do all of that. Last week we opened voting for the awards and hope you will participate. If you haven’t already, you just need to visit PowerfulIDEA.vote, check out the nominees, and cast your votes.

We'll have a month for community voting and two weeks for final judging. Next week we'll share more details and open registration for the events on June 6th & 7th. We’re hosting a live and virtual awards program, and a career and campaign services expo with a diverse variety of panels.

We’d love your input on some of the programming for these events. This community feedback helps shape the panel topics, professional development sessions, and speakers we invite.

We’d love community suggestions about this and more. Thank you!

For now sending our gratitude out to this amazing community.

In solidarity,

— Amy & the GAIN Power Team

Hey JTAL Community -

It’s been another eventful week. We’re excited about President Joe Biden’s formal re-election announcement.   President Biden said, “When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are.”  When we look around us and see the attacks on abortion rights, the failure to prevent gun violence, rising inflation costs, widespread student loan debt, the attacks on transgender children, and far-right extremism, it’s hard to argue with him on that point.

More exciting for me was VP Kamala Harris’ kick off campaign at Howard University surrounded by so many fierce women friends and leaders. Watching from afar and seeing my social feeds filled with images from this event filled my heart. Check out this post from the ACLU about the event.  I love how they are sharing theirs and other important endorsements from our powerful community of allied women-led organizations.

It feels like we’ve been fighting multiple wars on all fronts for the past few years. Wars against poverty, bigotry, gun violence, and so many other inequities have left many of us exhausted and unsure if we have any fight left. Weeks like these are a rallying cry to us all that the only way we stand a chance in saving our democracy is by working together.

In the coming weeks and months, we hope that you all utilize GAIN Power as a resource to find opportunities in your state and across the country to get involved in the 2024 election. Even if you’re don’t want to work on behalf of a candidate this election cycle, we need people to register voters, educate voters on ballot measures, volunteer to be poll workers and so much more. We will always do our duty to keep you all informed and provide a space for connection and encouragement. And be clear - we still have many important elections in 2023.

Joe Biden Launches His Campaign For President: Let's Finish the Job

Weekly updates from and about our member community

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Although this holiday began as a celebration of Mexico’s

defeat of France in 1862, it has evolved into a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture in the United States. Whether you decide to celebrate over food, drinks, or community with others, we hope that today is a reminder that the diversity of our country is one of its greatest strengths. When we meet that strength with the spirit of inclusion and belonging, there is nothing we can’t achieve together, even in the darkest times.

All Democratic & Progressive identifying consultants, vendors, tech companies and nonprofit organizations are invited to showcase their products and services. On June 8th from 12-4 pm ET, we are inviting expo owners and/or their teams to talk live with candidates, campaigns, party committee, and PAC, advocacy, and other organization that maybe hiring in 2023 or 2024. The “expo” will stay live with the event through the fall when we will have a new, similar event.

Consultants can staff the booths live or just submit materials to be included in it. Organizations and candidates can then stop by and visit consultants and campaign services vendors. Think of this as a virtual mall. Some organizations and firms may also have staff in the booth that you can chat with, some may not.

Greetings from Las Vegas, where I was in community with over 500 progressive activists at the BISC Road Ahead Conference. I was the first ED of BISC - 25 years ago - which feels totally crazy.  Knowing where and how it started and seeing it today is proof that as MLK taught us -  the ark of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.

Massive props for this go to Powerful IDEA nominee Chris Melody Fields Figueredo, and her team at BISC for this transformation. Not just of the BISC under her leadership - but in many ways, the progressive ecosystem landscape.  It is also a reminder of how important convening is for movement building. Weekly updates from and about our member community

Registration is open for the Powerful IDEA Awards. The ceremony & connected events are just a few weeks away, and I hope everyone who gets our emails will be part of them.

GAIN Power's mission is to promote the people who power professional, progressive politics. When we launched three years ago, we wanted to be more than a job board; we wanted to build a positive professional community. Recruiting new talent and retaining folks who do this work takes more than a village. Supporting the professionals powering progressive politics takes a collaborative creative community. Triggered by elections, the nature of democratic work is massive turnover and instability. Win or lose campaigns, many adjacent establishment organizations purge staff. Forming relationships is so critical to staying and thriving in our work. And we need more transparent pathways to become part of it. The world has changed so much since the global pandemic; a long time apart made networking a more significant challenge. We are no longer required to stay apart, but so many settled into virtual work, making meaningful connections harder to form. Regular convening is part of the solution. Programs celebrating and showcasing community work are too.

These are a few reasons we launched the Powerful IDEA Awards last year. This year we moved the program around to ensure better engagement and to be accessible to the broadest audiences. The best events help you see and connect to everyone at them - individuals and organizations. So the Powerful IDEA Awards registration is taking place on a unique event platform. It is built for this networking. (I’m sorry if this is a bit confusing -  I wish we had one site/app that did everything).

The biggest request we get is for more opportunities to make professional connections and our event app will help do that - so do register now to be part of it.

This week we announced the phenomenal co-chairs for our event, Tasha Cole & Guy Cecil!  Tasha & Guy bring decades of experience to this year’s awards program and are shining examples of the talent that elevates our movement. (Tasha was a also a Powerful IDEA Award winner last year).

Public voting concluded earlier this week.  Judged voting is happening now. Final awardees will be announced the following week before our award ceremony. Next week we’ll announcing some of our marquee award winners who will be part of the program and more.

Registration to attend is officially open NOW, and you do not want to miss this! The schedule is below (note a few changes).

Sign up for the events networking app which we’re using to make sure the event helps connect everyone and make it accessible to all, whether you can join us in DC or want to participate online. We’ll add more content to the app over the next few weeks, but you can use it to register today!

Register for the 2023 Powerful IDEA Awards!

We’d love your input on some of the programming for these events. This community feedback helps shape the panel topics, professional development sessions, and speakers we invite.

For now sending our gratitude out to this amazing community.

In solidarity,

— Amy & the GAIN Power Team

What a fantastic week! This week’s Powerful IDEA Awards ceremony, after-party, & connected events were spectacular!  We had over 500 people registered, and over 2,000 people streamed the ceremony and panels online via Facebook and Twitter. This event was magical for many reasons, but my favorite was bringing together multiple generations of organizers and activists.
