The National Education Association (NEA) is America’s oldest and

NEA seeks applications for its Associate Director of Human and Civil
Rights. The Human and Civil Rights Department advocates for social
justice, equity, and equal access for public school employees and
students in order to achieve the goal of a great public school for
every student. The Associate Director reports directly to the
Director. The Associate Director of Human and Civil Rights serves as
a member of NEA’s Center for Advocacy management team, participates in
the development and administration of the Association’s strategic
plan/initiatives/core services and budget; provides leadership in
developing the social and economic justice agenda for the NEA;
coordinates closely with the organization’s leadership and organizing
development teams; advises and guides Association leaders and staff in
policy and strategic decision making on human and civil rights issues.

Responsibilities:
• Works collaboratively with other NEA departments, affiliates, and
outside groups to monitor and analyze emerging human and civil rights
issues, national trends, and public policies of other organizations.
• Helps oversee the department’s efforts to train and support
activists and leaders in the area of social justice advocacy and
community organizing.
• Helps oversee the department’s professional development training
programs in the areas of bullying, diversity/cultural competence, ELL,
LGBT, safety/bias/sexual harassment, and social justice.
• Works collaboratively with other departments to enhance and support
leadership development, particularly of women and ethnic minority
members of the Association.
• Participates in the Center of Advocacy management team.
• Helps create an effective, high-performing, collaborative team among
the department staff.
• Helps oversees the department’s budget, staff development and
performance, and departmental operations.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Relevant graduate degree, and/or certification preferred.
• A minimum of seven years of NEA state association or equivalent
Human and Civil Rights experience required, with at least one year of
management-level experience preferred.
• Proven skill in developing, coordinating and implementing programs
and policies that help NEA members promote gender equity, advocate for
human and civil rights, and improve the effectiveness of public
education employees.
• Demonstrated experience in effectively managing staff resources and
budget to support the integration of efforts to promote HCR content
into all aspects of NEA.
• Proven ability in working collaboratively with other NEA departments
to organizing, and sustaining partnerships and alliances for public
education with parents, community, minority, education and
intergovernmental organizations, the private sector and other advocacy
groups.
• Proven experience in effectively managing staff resources and budget
to support the promotion of HCR content into all aspects of NEA.
• Proven ability in working collaboratively with other NEA departments
to organize and sustain partnerships and alliances for public
education with parents, community, minority, education, and
intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, and other
advocacy groups.
• Experience as an advocate for an organization that advances public,
parental, or business support for public education.
• Proven ability to create successful work teams, and to develop and
implement team action plans.
• Proven expertise in developing and implementing cooperative
partnerships with state affiliates and other key organizations
• Effective skills in supervision, decision-making, oral/written
communications, policy analysis, interpersonal relations, team
building, and collaboration.
