POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Greenpeace is best known for non-violent direct actions—the peaceful activities we deploy to defend the planet, advance our campaigns, and inspire citizens to become active in working toward a more green and peaceful planet. A sampling of images from our 35+-year history shows the breadth of our activities and extent of our capabilities.  The opportunity for creativity and innovation is vast.

The Greenpeace USA Action Team develops and coordinates non-violent direct actions in support of Greenpeace campaigns. Action staffers work with campaigners to identify strategic moments and creative ideas for actions and other forms of direct communication. The Action Team also cares for all the direct action equipment and runs a highly specialized technical training program to provide the skills Greenpeace activists need to go out and peacefully protest in dynamic ways.

The Greenpeace US Action Team is seeking a Junior Action Coordinator / Team Assistant. As a Junior Action Coordinator, they’re going to help support our activist training program as well as help design and deploy activities. As a Team Assistant they’re going to help keep track of action points, budget forms, bureaucratic deadlines and know where we filed that document we thought we wouldn’t need but now desperately need. We’re looking for someone who is calm under pressure, quick thinking and organized, and as comfortable running meetings as they are talking to authority figures. The day-to-day work ranges from helping support complex, multi-day events to leading protests and vigils to booking train tickets and taking meeting minutes.  They understand that a successful Greenpeace action relies not only on skilled and passionate activists, but also on respect and clear support given to those activists, diligent travel planning, budgeting, meeting facilitation and cooking.  They are a diplomatic link to finance and facilities departments to keep bills paid and the conference speakerphone working.  They supervise and mentor interns and fellows, train new activists in nonviolent direct action skills and don’t loose receipts. They can remain engaged through lots of wonky meetings and find a way to extract exciting opportunities for effective activities from them.

The Junior Action Coordinator / Team Assistant is forward-looking and helps the Action team director identify and resolve problems before they come over the horizon.  The opportunities to learn new and often unexpected skills are related to their own drive and ability to juggle and prioritize multiple projects.  They are committed to non-violent direct action as means of affecting change.

Working on the Greenpeace Action team can be exhausting and frustrating but there are few people in the world who enjoy their jobs more.
