Duties

Plans, develops, and presents on- and off-site curriculum-based education programs that are varied, multi-sensory, age-specific, multi-disciplinary, and consistent with the mission and congressional mandate of the park. Participates with the Chief of Education and other staff and partners in: developing Center education goals, policies, and program priorities. Designs and/or collects curriculum materials for specific grade levels to facilitate pre-visit classroom preparation and provide meaningful follow-up activities.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work overtime.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Will require occasional evening and weekend work.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/08/2022-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

Basic Education Requirement for Education Specialist GS-1701: Degree: full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors or higher degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position

Combination of education and experience, courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study

In addition to meeting one of the Basic Occupational Requirements listed above, the applicant must meet the following Minimum Qualification Requirement in order to be considered:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: 1) experience developing history and/or science education programs, including plans outlining themes, objectives, and activities and 2) leading park, museum, discovery center, outdoor, environmental, or other place-based or object-based youth
education programs. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. You must include transcripts.
-OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies"

NOTE: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
