Job
Summary:
The
Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator to
support the migration and modernization of legacy systems. This role focuses on
upgrading end-of-life (EOL) Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems
to current, supported versions while ensuring system security, performance, and
operational continuity.
Key
Responsibilities:
- Assess and analyze legacy systems, including Windows
Server (2012 and older) and RHEL (5/6/7), to determine upgrade
requirements and risks
- Develop and execute migration strategies for upgrading
systems to newer supported versions (Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 and
RHEL 7/8/9)
- Perform system migrations using best practices,
primarily through fresh installations rather than in-place upgrades
- Implement data backup and recovery procedures before,
during, and after migration activities
- Validate system functionality post-migration, including
performance, application compatibility, and network configurations
- Reconfigure system settings, services, and environments
after upgrades
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using tools
such as Ansible and PowerShell
- Apply system hardening techniques and ensure compliance
with security standards such as STIG, CIS benchmarks, and NIST guidelines
- Perform patch management and vulnerability remediation
using industry-standard tools
- Troubleshoot and resolve system issues during and after
migration, serving as an escalation point when needed
- Maintain accurate documentation of migration processes,
configurations, and system updates
- Provide regular status reports on migration progress,
risks, and milestones
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including
network, database, and application teams
- Communicate system changes, downtime, and impacts to
stakeholders and end users
- Ensure backup and disaster recovery solutions are
properly implemented and tested
- Conduct post-migration audits and identify
opportunities for system optimization
Required
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 years of experience in system administration
with both Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Strong experience upgrading and migrating legacy
systems to modern platforms
- Hands-on experience with Windows Server (2008–2022) and
RHEL (5–9)
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using Bash,
PowerShell, and/or Ansible
- Experience with configuration management tools and
system automation
- Strong troubleshooting skills for OS-level and
application-related issues
- Experience with virtualization technologies such as
VMware
- Solid understanding of system security, patch
management, and vulnerability remediation
- Experience implementing STIG-based hardening and
compliance standards
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Experience with tools such as SCCM, OpenSCAP, Nessus,
or similar vulnerability scanning tools
- Familiarity with enterprise change management processes
- Experience working in large-scale enterprise or
government environments
- Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery solutions
