General DBA Activities
A DBA is responsible for the following duties:
Azure SQL Server Databases
- Assuring all production and development databases are performing at a high performance and low-cost levels.
- Monitoring servers and databases to report new and unused servers and databases.
- Monitoring database baselines:
- Managing various database characteristics including but not limited to database size, compatibility levels, memory usage, page-life expectancy, table fragmentation levels, and I/O performance
- SQL Server and database principles and user permissions are appropriate and secure
- Managing various database characteristics including but not limited to database size, compatibility levels, memory usage, page-life expectancy, table fragmentation levels, and I/O performance
- Monitoring servers and databases to report new and unused servers and databases.
- Data Governance
- Reviewing changes to database schemas and tables to protect customer data and information
- Managing and maintaining classifications on all databases
- Masking customer data and monitoring access to sensitive customer and business data
- Monitoring classification and masking baselines on a regular basis
- Setting and managing data retention policies
- Reviewing changes to database schemas and tables to protect customer data and information
- Assuring all data is protected and recoverable in case service is comprised.
- Data in-use is geo-replicated to allow for data recovery after a disaster.
- Daily BACPACs are provided for development activities.

- Monitoring database performance
- Monitoring indexes and table statistics for optimal query performance on a monthly basis
- Monitoring indexes and table statistics for optimal query performance on a monthly basis
- Monitoring database consistency
- Monitoring changes to schema and table for classification and performance
- Monitoring changes to schema and table for classification and performance
- Monitoring Database Procedures
- Reviewing each database for procedure errors
- All databases over the last 7 days on a weekly schedule
- All private, multi-tenant databases and the top ten databases, based on logins and assessments from the weekly review, on each workday
- All databases over the last 7 days on a weekly schedule
- Monitoring the execution of regularly scheduled operational procedures on monthly, weekly, and daily executions.
- Ensuring all procedures record performance to assure procedures are being executed in a timely manner (execution times under 2 seconds as a goal).
- Ensure application stored procedures are recompiled on a monthly basis for performance using the latest indices and table statistics
- Staying update to date with changes to database technologies
- Recommending changes to existing databases for cost and performance
- Recommending appropriate tools for use by developers

- Monitoring Application data model changes
- Participates in code reviews for all database migrations.
- Works with teams on changes to data models.

Azure MySQL Databases
- Being aware of updates to the WordPress databases
- Assuring all production and development databases are performing at a high performance and low-cost levels.
- Monitoring servers and databases to report new and unused servers and databases.
- Monitoring database baselines:
- Managing various database characteristics including but not limited to database size, memory usage, page-life expectancy, table fragmentation levels, and I/O performance
