I am having trouble getting AutoRemote to work via bluetooth.  I have two Galaxy S4 phones (AT&T and Sprint).  They have been paired and added to each other as AutoRemote devices.  When I long pressed on the device and select Set Bluetooth device, it appears on the list.  When I select it I get the message "Set Bluetooth ID to xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" but it is immediately followed by "Not a valid QR code".  The BT symbol does appear next to the device.

I have tried with to send a message through the AR interface with the following results.

Airplane Mode Enabled, WIFI Off, BT On - No communication
Airplane Mode Enabled, WIFI On, BT Off - No problem (on same wifi network)
Airplane Mode Disabled, WIFI Off, BT Off - No problem

It appears communication is possible via mobile data and WIFI but not Bluetooth.

Lastly, I ran a Tasker routine on each device to enable Bluetooth Service with persistance (icon shows up on status bar) and repeated the test through the AR interface with the same results.

If I can provide any additional information to help troubleshoot please let me know.

Bump.

Any solution or comments?

I would like the two devices to communicate to each other via bluetooth with mobile data and wifi off.

Instead of airplane mode I also tested with turning off both wifi and mobile data and turning on bluetooth in the settings.  Again no communication.  Am I testing it correctly?

Testing out the new Bluetooth Near context in Tasker, the devices recognize each other.

HI can you clear your logs, enable system logs, try again and check the logs? Then post the logs here if you can.

Thanks

OK.  Here is the log with wifi and mobile data turned off.  Note that the phones are paired and I can share files via bluetooth with ES File Explorer.

I can concur with the symptoms of this problem, also receiving the "Not a valid QR code" message.  I don't know if you consider logs to be a "more the merrier" thing or if one is enough.  Let me know and I can send logs between a Note 2 N7100 and Nexus 7 flo.

OK. Tried it now with four different devices and can't get it to work.  I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what.

This is very weird. I just tried it again and it still works for me.

You can safely ignore the QR code part. That's just a bug.
Can you please try to  do this on the device that is going to send the message through BT:
 - long press the device that is going to receive the message and press "Refresh Device"
 - Make sure you have internet access when doing this.

Thanks and sorry for the hassle.

I refreshed both devices (with internet access on) and they communicated with each other as evidenced by "Set Get device info to HS4", "Received GCM" and "Received Get device info from HS4"

Tried to send a message both ways and message successfully sent and received by both devices.

Turned off wifi and mobile data.  Made sure BT was still on, on both devices.  Retrys on sending device, no response from receiving device.

My application is that I have an old HTC without a data plan installed in my car that will be used for music and navigation.  I want it to send a message to my phone when powered up so I can provide internet access by tethering it to my phone.

But you did enable the AutoREmote BT service in a Tasker task before trying to send a message?

Yes.  I have the persistent AR icon displayed in my status bar for both devices.

It would appear however that the trouble is with the sending device.  All I get is retries when I turn off wifi and mobile data on the sending device regardless of the state of the receiving device.

Wow do I feel like an idiot.  Got it working here.  Suddenly it clicked in my brain what I had to do.  I am successfully sending messages back and forth from a Note 2 N7100 and Nexus 7 flo.

Can you share what you did?  Was it enabling AR BT service in Tasker?  It still is not working for me either using the AR interface or via Tasker.

Yeah it was the service. I must have been brain locked because I never tried that. The only other thing I can really suggest, in the event you have not done so, is to long tap the opposing device in the devices list and then select "Set Bluetooth Device" and choose accordingly. Even though my devices were already paired together, I thought it couldn't hurt to do that in case Autoremote maintains it's own table of devices to MACs.

Thanks but I have the service running and have "Set the Bluetooth Device" multiple times.  Glad you got yours working, I am still perplexed.

BTW - can you confirm that they still communicate via BT if you turn wifi and mobile data off?

Yes, I disabled the Wifi from the Nexus 7 and killed Bluetooth tethering and it still works.  I also got it to work between the Nexus 7 and my Vz Galaxy S3.

Mobile data was also off?

I have the N7 flo. There is no mobile data. I didn't turn mobile data off on my phone, but seeing that without WiFi the N7 has only Bluetooth to fall back on, I felt it was a pretty good test.

You can also check the logs to see how the message was sent (turn on system logs).

I still facing the same problem of not able to send message through BT (Couldn't send through Bluetooth: read failed, socket might closed or timeout, read ret: -1).

I have two phones: Phone 1 running 4.4.2, used to be able to send out message via BT but can not now.
Phone 2 running 4.2.2, can send message via BT to Phone 1, no problem.

Phone 1 and 2 can send message to each other via 3G with no problem.

Google this error message ("socket might closed or timeout") comes up several hit, it seems an issue related to BT socket..

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13648373/bluetoothsocket-connect-throwing-exception-read-failed

unpairing and repairing Phone 1 and 2 BT sometimes works for a moment, however, after (maybe 1 hr) stop working completely.

Ran across an old post on google+ that talked about setting the timeout to 999.

I tried this and viola!

BT messages!
