Facts surrounding the gun raise questions about Burke planting
evidence.

Others have questioned Burke's precipitate departure from the DA's
office at a time when, according to his book, he was Newman Flanagan's
golden boy. Another reason the "higher ups" might have had for
encouraging Burke to seek opportunities in the private sector, spend
more time with his family, or whatever might have been that he was
getting too expensive for them. The highly publicized search for
Lenny's boat, for which Burke secured the participation of the revered
Doc Edgerton, cost the Commonwealth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
An ADA who'd spend that kind of money on a red herring in the course
of a prosecution he knew to be wrongful in the first place is an ADA
who's no longer affordable.

This was probably more than just being too expensive. He was obsessed
trying to pin the crime on Paradiso. He falsified evidence and did try
to get an indictment. If an indictment came down in this case Paradiso
and defense attorneys would have had had access to information. That's
not to say they would have gotten it, but it would have made things
more visible and the press might have challenged more. Higher ups
didn't want an indictment in this case. It allowed them to do just
what they are doing today, hide behind this as an open case and deny
any acccess to the real records and facts. They continue to support
very false allegations that have damaged people's lives.

This came into the email from skydove:

These are very good points. The "outrageous expense" aspect may have
been used to sugar-coat the presumed firing of Burke, or at least to
give him something to tell his wife. It would also have served as a
reminder that Burke's cowboy tactics were getting old, that as Ahab
pursuing a Quahog, he was not only crossing too many lines himself but
pressuring regular working law enforcement officers to cross lines for
him. Neither the county nor the commonwealth wanted to keep taking
risks like that.

I agree that there were people who were caught up in this and knew
more than they were saying. I think Burke's departure should very
much be scrutinized. If I was Palombo's family I would wonder about
the accident he had. Kevin Burke pulls support for investigation
after the remains are found. There are people with a lot to lose if
they think the truth is going to come out. You can bet that's why
there is such resistance to opening the files. It won't stop the
truth. Too much has been learned and in too many hands now.
