A QUEST FOR EXOGENEITY: A SAGA OF EMPIRICAL ECONOMICS

Speaker: Ritadhi Chakravarti

Phd. Scholar, University of California, Berkeley

Venue:  Committee Room, Central Library, JNU

Date and Time: 24th August 2015 (Monday), 4:30 pm

Abstract

Empirical economics research in the past couple of decades has been marked by a constant move from correlation to causation. This has led to a continuous search amongst economists for both natural and randomized experiments to meet the standards of ‘exogeneity’. One such quasi-experimental design is the outcome of close elections, where the difference in victory margin between the winner and runners-up of an election is arbitrarily small. This talk outlines how economists cope with this quest for exogenous variation, and some applications of the outcomes of close elections to answer critical questions related to political economy.

We look forward to your participation.
