I was asked some questions on Leadership etc. (in form of an interview) a while back and just sharing the published responses.

Since this is in public domain, thought to share and debate the thoughts in this forum.

Anuj,

An extremely well written and terse article. Truly enjoyed reading it.

In general, there seems to be a great deal of confusion over the difference between "Leadership" and "Management" and you have rightly pointed out some of the key attributes needed to be an effective Leader.

Leadership is about Influence. People don't want to be managed. They want to be lead.

I read somewhere " Making sure the work is done by others is the accomplishment of a manager"  and "Inspiring others to do a better work is the accomplishment of a leader".

Man!
I am impressed. Magazine and Khurana you guys seem to have moved into a different league altogether. Well done.

Inspiring someone and being successful at it is incredibly tough (or I found it to be the case). What have you guys used in the past to inspire someone? Did you succeed? What do you do to inspire your self?

I have not been able to inspire anyone yet. As far as self inspiration is concerned, I keep reminding me of the alternative.

A little digression but the one thing I did not like about managerial role was that it introduced a lot of administrative/busy work.

Hey, nothing great about this interview, i guess it is just one the perks of staying connected with the community. Nothing more!

Inspiring someone (atleast in organization context) is more of an exercise in communication than just individual achievements. I cant say if i really inspire anyone in the organization as people do tend to view you from different lenses. I have found having passion for something and demonstrating in a positive way to the people would help create inspiration (again an exercise in communication) in some cases.

You may be mistaken in saying you dont inspire anyone.

Administrative work is a necessary evil, i found it hard to get used to it during my early days but realize it had to be done right as well because of it being important part of Managerial role. People do create a lot of perception based on how you do that part of the role.

So are others in this group too. Its just that you guys are too busy to share your thoughts and be vocal about it.

It starts with effective Communication (as Anuj rightly pointed out) which leads to Recognition that ultimately turn into Influence/Inspiration. I think it take years of practice and perseverence to be a leader that can inspire/influence others. Even so called "born leaders" are only effective when they apply such principles for an extended time.

I have not been able to inspire anyone yet. As far as self inspiration is concerned, I keep reminding me of the alternative.
Strongly beleive in yourself for the right reasons, practice what you preach i.e. say what you do and do what you say helps quite a bit.

Yes, unfortunately that comes with the package and I struggle with that too. I read somewhere to apply Pareto (20/80) Principle to prioritize and delegate your work.
