Laz Slomovits, of the folk duo Gemini, played a number of concerts
at Cafe’ 704 over the years, always with his wife Helen, until she
passed away in 2012. To honor Helen’s memory, and to celebrate her life,
Laz is dedicating this yearly concert to her. Proceeds from the evening
will be donated to two organizations: one that supports nature
preservation, and the other, an emergency shelter for homeless children
and their families. Both causes were very close to Helen’s heart. Laz will be joined by nine musicians, all of whom recorded and / or performed with Helen: his brother San, his niece, Emily, Peter Madcat Ruth, Jeanne Mackey, Laurel
Federbush, Alaura Massaro, Lori Fithian, Jean Chorazyczewski, and Eric
Fithian. Laz and guests will sing some of Helen’s songs, as well as original and traditional music in both folk and classical styles.
For Pete's Sake - Celebration of Pete Seeger's 100th Birthday
Thursday, 5/16. 8 pm. Tickets: $20.
This year marks the 100th birthday of folk legend Pete Seeger, and this10th annual tribute concert is a celebration of his life and music. The
concert will once again be a benefit for the Ark; it feels fitting, as
we celebrate the life of a man whom Bruce Springsteen has called “the
grandfather of American folk music,” to honor and support a folk music
institution that has brought such great music to our community for more
than 50 years. We’ll tell stories and, in the true Seeger tradition,
lead lots of singalongs. Joining the three of us (San, Laz and Emily)
will be Dick Siegel, Billy King, Jeanne Mackey, David Owens, Judy
Banker, Michael Hough, and Jacob Warren.
Quote of the day: "Life is a good teacher and a good friend. Things are always in transition, if we could only realize it. Nothing ever sums itself up in the way that we like to dream about. The off-center, in-between state is an ideal situation... It's a very tender, non-aggressive, open-ended state of affairs." --Pema Chodron
