Greetings,
I've got a lot of gigs of various sorts this fall! I turned 65 last month, and decided to embrace the big event by talking, writing, and singing about aging and death! Oddly enough, it's proving to be a winning strategy.
For starters, I hope you'll read my personal essay, Field Notes of an Elder-in-Training in the current Crazy Wisdom Journal (it's also online). I'll be doing a little blogging for the journal later this fall.
And here's the calendar:
Songs & Stories from an Elder-in-Training
Wed., 9/30, 7-8:30 p.m.
Ann Arbor District Library: Downtown. 343 S 5th Ave
I'll share songs, personal stories, and reflections on the aging process in this interactive session. Free. More info.
Peace All-Stars Concert: Honoring Black Lives
Sat., 10/17, 7:00 p.m.
Temple Beth Emeth/St. Clare's Episcopal, 2309 Packard St., A2.
Storyteller and singer La'Ron Williams hosts this musical tribute to peace, justice, and black lives. With Rev. Robert Jones, Edie Lewis, Glen Thomas Rideout, Peter "Madcat" Ruth, and more. Benefit for Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice. A portion of the proceeds benefit Mentor2Youth. Purchase tickets here. $15 advance, $20 at the door, $50 benefactor. (You'll see me running around in my role as house manager!)
And When I Die: Songs & Stories About Death
Sat., 10/24, 8:00 p.m.
Canterbury House, 721 E. Huron.
Natural death-care educator Merilynne Rush and singer-guitarist Jeanne Mackey offer an evening of songs, stories--and maybe a skit or two--reflecting various perspectives on death--humorous, sad, thoughtful, and quirky. $5 suggested donation. All Souls/Day of the Dead Gathering
Sun., Nov. 1, 6-8:30 p.m.
Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, 3257 Lohr Rd, Ann Arbor
An interfaith gathering to remember and honor those who have passed--through music, a meal, and ceremony. Vegetarian stew and tea provided. Bring photos, mementos of loved ones, and a dish to pass if you like. Open to all-- pagan, orthodox, mystic, or unsure. $5 suggested donation. Hosted by Jeanne Mackey.
