Greetings,
The Boston-based
Ballad Project is a cool creative collaboration between bassist Doug
Rich and my long-time friend, alto saxophonist
Willie Sordillo. On Tuesday, June 11, Willie and Doug are coming to Oz's Music in Ann Arbor. Here's the scoop:
Tuesday, June 11. Come to the Anything Goes--Acoustic Jam open mic from 7:30 to 8:00 (sign up by email or phone with Oz's Music), then stay for the duo's performance. Donations happily accepted for t Know Obstacles (Oz's band for teens and adults with special needs). Here is the Facebook event:
Doug and
Willie have played together in jazz ensembles, gospel groups, R&B
and funk bands for more than 20 years. Their
repertoire draws from original works, jazz
ballads by other composers, and wholly improvised material created on the spot.
I first met Willie in the late 70s. He put out some great topical folk music albums, including Please Tip Your Waitress, Walls to Roses: Songs of Changing Men, and Feeding the Flame: Songs by Men to End AIDS. He later played with a Latin ensemble, Flor de Caña, after switching from guitar to sax as his main instrument.
Hope to see you next Tuesday at Oz's! Who knows, I may sit in on a tune.
Blessings,
Jeanne Mackey
