Dear Sisters,

Happy New Year!!!  May your New Year filled with fantastic moments and terrific experiences in China!!!

We had a great successful reading in last year.  A big thanks to all the families who did a fantastic job to take their time to prepare, to read, to sing, to connect, to love.  The children, the parents, the Pudong Library director, and the Library staff were very happy.

For those of you who are new , our church members perform a community service by conducting an English story time at the Pudong public library on Saturday mornings, 10:00 am to 10:45 am.  This program has brought a lot of smiles and happiness in many children and parent's life.  The Shanghai Pudong Library is located on 88  Qiancheng Road (前程路88).  It is between Hu Nan Road (沪南路 and Jinxiu Road (錦琇路).  The English Story Time is on the first floor in the Number 3 Hall.  The time is from 10:00 am to 10:45 am.  However,  they like us be in the room by 9:30 a.m. to be prepared (and they worry if no one is there to present and a crowd is gathering).

There is usually about 100 children and parents there. Most of the kids are 3-6 years old and they don’t know English but after almost a year of these activities they seem to be able to sing many of the popular English kid’s songs (e.g., heads shoulders knees and toes, twinkle twinkle little star, if you’re happy and you know it, itsy bitsy spider, wheels on the bus go round and round). Some can even answer questions about what color is what.

What most people do is to combine reading stories, singing songs, or very simple interaction with questions and answers. They like it when a whole family participates (you could take turns reading stories or leading the songs or do it all together).

Dear Ladies,

On December 20, 2013,  I officially let the Library know that  "Shanghai LDS Relief Society"  was the organization that has been doing the English Story Time for past one and a half years.  I felt so good to have  LDS Relief Society take the credit instead of my foreigner friends .  I got the permission from President Dyer.

Please sign up for the upcoming readings.

Mo and anyone else-
I have a crazy amount of children's books (people pass them on when they move).

Welcome to borrow, for sure!

Hey all you gorgeous gals on this group-

I just wanted to give a plug for Library time- this is a very fun thing to do, and Tami has supported it sooooo faithfully for the few years that I have been here.  She goes EVERY SATURDAY to help translate when necessary (which is usually) and we go only once or twice a year.  This is a great way to do community service and to interact with sweet Chinese kids who are only too eager to show off their few words of English.

It is not difficult to do, it is only about 35-40 minutes.  You think of a theme you like or your kids like - (trucks, animals, colors, winter, holiday) and find a few books from your house that you think are appropriate (simple).  Print some pictures from the internet, and/or think of a few songs that are fun to sing that might go with the theme (or not, it doesn't really matter).  Anything you do is appreciated.  I know Tami really needs someone this SATURDAY, and several other days the next few months.  I hope you will all consider taking a turn.  Love, Tiffany
