The Good News Group and I went to talk at a Harvest Service in Middleton, Manchester and was impressed to see how they had made a visual timetable powerpoint. The same symbols appeared on the service sheet. These small additions can make a huge difference for someone visiting, especially if they have additional needs, anxiety or just wants to know what is happening and when.

All pupils, especially those with special education needs and learners who struggle with organisation, can benefit from using a visual timetable. Ensure that pupils get to grips with the structure of their day from the outset with these hand-picked individual plans and whole class displays.

Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) is an online self-serve tool that helps plan your course schedule. It lets you graphically view schedule options and create a timetable based on the courses and times that work best for you. VSB arranges selected courses into conflict-free timetable options and displays them in an easy-to-read weekly schedule.

VSB timetables look different depending on the academic session. The summer session timetable displays a single week-like calendar block. The fall/winter session timetable is divided into two halves: the left one displays fall courses and the right one displays winter courses. Courses that run across throughout the fall/winter session (such as Term Y courses) will appear in both halves.

If you select courses offered only on week days, they will get displayed in a five-day timetable grid from Monday to Friday. If any of the courses you are interested in are offered on weekends, they will be plotted in a six- or seven-day calendar (including Sunday and/or Saturday) depending on the day(s) your course is offered. Be sure to look at the top row of your timetable to see which columns correspond to which days of the week.

One great feature of VSB is the ability to block off personal time when you don't want classes. You can create these blocks by clicking and dragging in the timetable grid. The system will preferentially show you possible schedule that avoid these times. (Possible schedules that show classes overlapping with these blocked-off times will still appear but will be moved to the back of the viewing order.)

To remove a blocked-off time, click it in the timetable grid.You can also prioritize schedule options by using the options in the Sort preference drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner of the Results panel.

If you would like to manually enter personal times, rather than clicking and dragging on the schedule grid, you can enable accessibility features by clicking Increase Accessibility in the Select Courses panel. You can then type a time range in the Add Personal Times box below the timetable grid in the Results panel, then click Add Time. To remove every personal time added to the timetable grid, click Clear all Personal Times.

If your enrolment window is open, and you have no advising and/or financial blocks on your record preventing enrolment, you can immediately use the Registration and Enrolment Module (REM) to enrol in courses. To do this quickly, copy the course catalog numbers (one at a time) from the Cat #s box below the list of courses in the Results panel. Enrol as soon as you can after deciding on your schedule because the seat availability information is constantly updated constantly. It is possible that a course that was not full when you created your VSB timetable may be full by the time you go attempt to add it within REM.

Visual schedules are words, pictures or visual representations - such as a timetable - of the sequence of activities or events that will happen over a certain time. Visual schedules can be varied to suit the needs of your students, from all-day timetables on the whiteboard, to personalised short session timetables.

Visual schedules help students to understand what they will be doing and reassures them about what will be coming next. They can help teachers to visually organise their day and communicate this non-verbally.

If a student has a personalised timetable on their desk, they may need an individualised prompt as well. An example of a nonverbal prompt would be to stand close to their desk and draw attention to their schedule as you give the instruction to the class.

Although visual timetables have been part of good practice for a number of years, within special educational needs education, recent studies show that in some areas up to 50 percent of children are entering school with lower than expected language skills (Freeman et al, 2009). The positive impact of implementing a visual timetable, accessible for all children in a setting, is to promote two-way communication between practitioners and children, to increase independence, instil confidence and to reduce anxiety that can occur between transitions (Talking point, 2013).

A visual timetable is a sequence of symbols, pictures or photographs that represent activities to show the children the likely routine throughout the day. The visual images are usually displayed in a linear fashion, either vertically or horizontally, whatever best suits the space available. It can be used for individual children or whole groups and must be easily visible at the children's eye level for ease of access.

Advantages include: Giving children more thinking time; more time to process information communicated by practitioners; and more opportunities for inclusive and enabling provision. It is vital that adults are fully attentive in the interaction with the children, engaging them in the use of the timetable. Constant reference to the timetable, is essential throughout the day; supported with single word vocabulary when using the symbols. This is fundamental, and allows children to begin to make the connection between the spoken word, the symbol and the action.

Although the structure of the children's day is displayed on the timetable, that does not mean that the autonomy and choice making is taken away, in fact far from it. Children are encouraged to help with the timetable, placing and removing cards on the main board and helping to make choices of toys or activities using the choice boards, which contain smaller versions of the symbols, and which are signposted on the drawers/containers/toys within the setting.

Considering the way the brain typically develops and learns concepts and language, and the research that supports the relationship between the use of symbols with individuals that have additional needs, it can be argued that the objects of reference visual timetable can be used to support the development and initial communication and language acquisition for all children in the early years.

The visual timetable is set up at the beginning of the day to display the activities that are planned for the morning; only three to four symbols are displayed at one time. The display is at the children's eye level for easy access and for full exploration of the objects. Practitioners talk to the children throughout their investigations about what it represents, using appropriate language and gestures, (Yoder et al, 2009).

Once the children understand the concept of the symbols and fully grasp the meaning, they begin to use the timetable independently, looking at it and predicting what activities are going to happen, and when. They then make the transition between activities more confidently and with greater emotional security, because they understand the changes.

The understanding of a concept and being able to link words to visual and tactile prompts is a learning process that takes time and varies from child to child. By definition, a process is always evolving and this resource can be adapted to suit different stages of development. It is fully inclusive and meets the needs experienced by children learning more than one language and children with additional or special educational needs.
