It's interesting to look at the potential
development ... or perhaps painful would be another way to describe
things. For those of you with Google Earth
crank that thing up and take a look.
Jabour's RV Campground (223 Elizabeth St.) closed a
few years ago in anticipation of going condo. I don't think they had any
construction going on during last year's MOTM so that place is pretty much
idle. If you look at Google Earth you can still see a few motor homes down
there in a row - they are gone now.
Across the street and on the waterfront is
the Conch Republic Seafood Company. Rumors have been flying for
some time that some developer has been trying to buy that place (or buy the
lease; I think that the city actually owns that property) so that they can do a
condo development in conjunction with the Jabour's development.
See that little nondescript building right in the
middle there between Jabour's and Conch Republic? Right there where the
docks make a 90 degree angle? That's Shrimpboat Sound Studios, so we don't
have to tell you who owns that building.
To the east of Shrimpboat is Schooner Wharf.
The word for the last several months is that a faction in KW has been trying to
find a way to break Schooner's lease with the city. Supposedly
Schooner has 9 years left on a 10 year lease, but the developers are eyeing that
property too.
And, of course, just to the east of Schooner is
Turtle Kraals and the Half Shell.
*ALL* of that dockside property, from the Conch
Republic to the Half Shell, is in real danger of going condo. And that, in
my opinion, would not only be a tragedy but would be another nail in the coffin
of what was the wild and semi-civilized Key West that many of us knew and
loved.
