But is it rock 'n' roll?

Recently I had a discussion with my husband about JC.

He asked me, What's a dry dream

I conveyed what I've read/heard in interviews. That JC meant it to be the opposite of typical male showoff cock rock. I said, his is a different kind of rock 'n' roll.

Husband said, JC doesn't do rock 'n' roll. He does spoken word with hired musicians behind him.

I then mentioned that many people considered JC's music to be punk, and that he's often referred to as the "punk poet."

I disagree with what my husband said--I do think JC's albums are rock 'n' roll, or, in the case of Pools of Mercury, a blend of spoken word and rock. After all, he does actually sing on some of the tracks.

What do you think?

Dear Sandra,
I agree with you totally. Just because he is doing spoken word while the music plays behind him does not disqualify his band from rock and roll. That is a ridiculously narrow (and I might add boring) definition of rock and roll. Jim sings when he feels like singing and does spoken word when that feels right to him. The man is an artist, his band plays rock and roll. What's the problem?
I enjoy your letters. Keep it up. Blessings.

Oh, Jim totally was rock 'n Roll. 4 albums to prove it. Lou Reed would back that up, 100%, I am sure.

Hi, Joey--Thanks for your comments--I appreciate it!
My husband and I have always argued about music. It's just something we do--no harm meant.

I'm sure Lou would agree, too!
