Can anyone here download and save YouTube videos?

I could do it if I had the dollars.

Can anyone download the treasures that will likely otherwise vaporize very soon?

Listening to this one right now:

I have no way to save this.

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!

This one is important.

Thanks,
Cassie

Hi Cassie,

Do you need a software to download Youtube videos or a way to store them or both? At one point I used a software called (I think) 4K Video Downloader that was super simple and able to download really long videos directly to your computer - I'm sure there are others that you can find. In terms of storage, maybe you can create a private Youtube channel and upload the video to it and just make it private?

Best,
Patricia (you can still call me Amme!)

Hi All - I am happy to chip in if someone can come up with a budget that is needed to preserve these.

Thanks for your amazing work on the website, Cassie! My understanding is that you can’t really download and save YouTube vids or audio, even if you have a Premium account, at least not in the traditional sense and not without a third-party app. The download function in YouTube saves the video in an encrypted format on your device for later viewing. It’s not just something you can then upload to a different website. Actual downloading through a third-party app may also violate YouTube’s terms of use and could result in the revocation of your account. If the material is copyrighted, you could end up with legal problems. See AI post below for more detailed info.

The easiest/quickest thing would be to collect the URLs to these types of recordings and publish them as links on the website, but that doesn’t protect them from disappearing from YouTube at some point. A longer term solution would be to contact the holders of the YouTube accounts where they are posted and ask for access to the original file, or at least a release to use a 3rd party app to download them and republish them to Jim’s website.

Hope this is helpful,

~erhard

Here’s a quick AI response to the question, “Can you truly download YouTube videos and audio”:

Yes, you can download YouTube videos through the official YouTube Premium service, which allows for offline viewing within the app, or by using unauthorized third-party tools and websites, though this often violates YouTube's Terms of Service and copyright law. Downloading audio alone is not officially supported; YouTube Premium only offers full video downloads for offline use.

Official, Legal Method: YouTube Premium

  1. Subscribe to YouTube Premium: This paid service offers a download feature for offline viewing.
  1. Use the YouTube App: On a mobile device, you can find a "Download" button below the video, which requires a subscription to use.
  1. Watch Offline: Downloaded videos are stored encrypted within the app and can only be accessed through the YouTube app itself.

Unofficial, Third-Party Methods

  1. Online Downloaders: Many websites allow you to paste a video's URL to download it.
  1. Desktop Software: Programs like 4K Video Downloader can be used to download videos.
  1. Browser Extensions: Extensions such as Video DownloadHelper can add download functionality to your browser.

Important Considerations for Unofficial Methods

  • Terms of Service Violation: Using third-party tools often violates YouTube's Terms of Service.
  • Copyright Infringement: Downloading copyrighted videos without permission can lead to legal consequences.
  • Security Risks: Some third-party tools may contain malware or unwanted ads.
