Now in its 37th year, The Tech Challenge invites teams of students in Grades 4-12 to use the engineering design process to solve a real-world problem. Participants spend months collaborating and becoming deeply engaged in the challenge while documenting their progress and designs. The program culminates in an inspiring two-day showcase in April where teams put their solutions to the test in front of judges.

Understanding the properties of the first generation of galaxies is an ongoing challenge. While advances in deep field observation have led to the identification of large numbers of galaxies at z > 6, there are very few observed galaxies at this range that are sufficiently bright (mab < 25) to perform high signal-to-noise spectroscopy on them. Further complicating meaningful work with these high-z galaxies is the difficulty in optically distinguishing bright but distant galaxies from nearby ones that have been obscured by dust. We have identified new candidate z > 6 galaxies in HST images of massive galaxy clusters, providing a new sample of five highly magnified and intrinsically faint candidate galaxies. Of this sample, we examine two strongly lensed galaxies that appear as multiple images on the sky, collected by the HST WFC3 with ground-based NIR imaging as supplementary data. Both are characterized by a drop-off in their spectra corresponding to a specific spectral feature that sets a lower bound on the redshift. These dropout galaxies are contrasted with three galaxies collected by SDSS, which have a distinctly different spectra while having similar apparent magnitudes at the observed wavelengths. Using the open-source SED modeling software Prospector, we demonstrate that the redshift, mass, and age of the high-z galaxies can not only be constrained with limited available data, but that the associated high-z galaxies can be successfully distinguished from dusty low-z galaxies. Our work results in two new bright (mab 24) strongly lensed z > 6 galaxies, providing a path forward for future analysis on the early era of galaxy formation.

My fellow fanatics, Halloween is upon us. A time where we flirt with the darker, scarier side of the world. Where we put on costumes and masks and indulge in the fantasy of being something else. Of impish pranks and ghoulish decorum.

Which will be the focus of this list today. These are five games that, based on atmosphere, quality of gameplay, as well as refinement and polish, tried to make you feel like you were in a cosmic horror story.

More an adaptation of the Lovecraft story The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Dark Corners of the Earth is an utterly strange game to look back on. In many ways, it gets the atmosphere and tone just right. You play as a reporter investigating odd things happening in the town of Innsmouth, only to discover that the small fishing village is the stage for horrendous rituals performed by an insane cult.

And there was the sanity mechanic. Every time you saw or experienced something horrific or unnatural, your mental state would start getting worse. Hallucinations would start popping up, weird things would start happening to the world that no one but you seem to notice. And if it gets bad enough, your character will take their own life resulting in a game over.

But while Dark Corners of the Earth does a good job with atmosphere, as an adaptation it starts to fall apart when it devolves into a bog standard action game. What starts as a pretty tense investigation story where you are hiding from the more aggressive townspeople and assembling clues eventually turns into a stealth-focused action game where you can just shoot your attacker. At one point you get help from the US Navy and wind up killing the demigod Dagon after the cult summons him. Then you run around with a psychic alien gun to prevent the end of the world.

In fact, at one point developer Infogrames wanted this to be an official Call of Cthulhu game, but the owner of the rights, Chaosium, ultimately turned down the licensing, saying the game was too simplistic to do the material justice.

Then something truly unsettling happens about halfway through: you discover the source of the monsters and your strength. Of course, this means getting into the deep lore and worldbuilding of Bloodborne so bare with me.

On the whole, this is probably my favorite dynamic shift in gaming. Where I was once an unstoppable monster hunter, suddenly I was hiding behind corners, trying not to die from horrible sights. Burning through medicine to keep myself dying of a heart attack. Facing increasingly distorted and disturbing creatures hoping against hope that I could kill them before my sanity fully dissipated.

Bloodborne is definitely the most action-focused entry on this list, but the way it slowly introduces elements of cosmic horror into the narrative, level design, and creature encounters makes it the most impactful in selling the terror of truly coming up against something out of your league. An experience no one has played will forget any time soon.

This makes Darkest Dungeon one of the best portrayals of cosmic horror in games. Not only does it show just how fragile the human mind is in the face of the unknown, not only does it make you feel the desperation and anxiety of keeping such horrors in check, it quietly presses you to go deeper and deeper into the dark for your own personal ends, despite knowing full well what might be waiting for you on the other side. Allowing the greatest of human curiosity to be crushed and overwhelmed by the terrors of what must never be known.

After nearly a decade, SpongeBob SquarePants got a brand-new 3D platformer in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. This new adventure has SpongeBob and a balloon version of Patrick traveling to different realms to rescue their friends that had been sucked into portals. Because it is new, it is also one of the first SpongeBob games to get a full list of achievements to earn.

Each achievement ranges between simply finishing levels and accomplishing a specific challenge. While some of these are straightforward, many others are simply very difficult to get. It's worth mentioning that the achievement "One Sponge To Rule Them All," which is the achievement for collecting all the achievements, is excluded from this list.

The Cosmic Shake introduces various jelly enemies we haven't seen before. One that is introduced in the later levels is Burrowers. These worm-like cosmic creatures are massive, digging underground and shooting up to hit SpongeBob. Luckily, its attack doesn't only hurt SpongeBob.

Most times, the Burrower will be joined by a handful of other jelly enemies. If you are able to time it well, you can make the enemies stand right on top of where the Burrower pops out of the ground. The "Jaws with Flaws" achievement challenges you to defeat ten enemies using this method.

Along with the basic enemies that do nothing but just try to attack you, there are also Jelly Makers. These sentient piles of goo will angrily sit there and shoot enemies at you constantly until you hit it three times. While there are plenty of moves that SpongeBob can use against the jelly, an achievement awards you for taking a more creative approach.

Knocking an enemy into the Jelly Maker will deal damage to it. So in the "Return to Sender" achievement, you will need to find five Jelly Makers and hit them three times each using other enemies. There are certain areas where this can be very difficult, but there are a couple of corners of Bikini Bottom where you can defeat one, reset, and defeat it again in a short grinding session.

One of the newer twists in The Cosmic Shake is that you are able to dress SpongeBob up in a variety of costumes, some of which tie directly into the levels that you visit. However, there are also a ton of costumes that can be purchased the more doubloons you collect. Earning all costumes gets you the "Fashion Hunter" achievement.

In all, there are a total of 35 different costumes in the game, with only a couple available from the start and a total of seven costumes that are earned by just completing the campaign. However, there are a bunch that can only be purchased once you reach new tiers. Plus, there are two that require completing side quests.

A big part of The Cosmic Shake is its collect-a-thon elements. Many levels have some sort of collectible that is worth looking for to complete specific side quests. However, there is one secret collectible that fans of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom will be very familiar with: golden spatulas.

Unlike that game, The Cosmic Shake has only one golden spatula in each level of the game. To achieve the "SpongeLock HolmesPants" achievement, you must find all eight that are available. They are likely hiding in the most hidden places in each level, so it is important to dig for them.

There is no question that the most difficult achievements in the game are ones that require beating the bosses in a specific way, requiring the most amount of skill. For example, the first "boss" is a chase involving Mr. Krabs, who does not want to return to Bikini Bottom since he is getting rich in an alternate reality.

For "The Good, The Bad, and the Krabby" award, you must catch Mr. Krabs in under three minutes. That includes chasing his train on your seahorse, then quickly moving from train car to train car knocking out enemies as quickly as possible to advance. Keep in mind that there are some train cars you can just move right through without defeating enemies.

Early on, SpongeBob will have to deal with a beefy enemy in the Big Jelly. These muscular creatures carry around a bathtub that they use as a weapon. They can either swing the tub down or spin around with it. SpongeBob must avoid his attacks, but so do the other Jellies.

Similar to the Burrower, Big Jelly's attacks can lead to friendly fire and the death of other Jellies in battle. With regard to the "Wrath-tub" achievement, Big Jelly must accidentally defeat 25 enemies with its tub for you to get this award. Like any of these enemy-based achievements, there are specific locations where grinding for this achievement makes things easier.
