Morerecently, the mall's Marshall's location closed in October. Macy's Northgate store was cut in 2020 as part of the clothing retailer's plan to cut more than 100 stores by 2023. Sears, another anchor store at the mall, closed in 2018, though it's expected to have a second life after the township bought it for $2.2 million in partnership with The Port.
Colerain Township Trustee Dan Unger said Xscape's closure isn't a unique situation, noting many movie theaters have shuttered since the COVID-19 pandemic made streaming movies at home even more popular.
He said trustees won't step in to save this establishment like they did with Sears, as the trustees' job is primarily funding and maintaining the roads, police and fire departments. Unger was the lone "no" vote on the Sears sale.
The new movie theater includes electric recliners, reserved seating, large format screens with 4K digital projection and 70ft screens. The theater will have free daytime showings of family movies during the summer.
