“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Al-Ra’ad: Ayat 11)

Assalaamalaikum Alumni Members,

Inshallah this email finds you well. Before we begin - if you're busy, just read the boldIt has come to our attention that responses to the JHUMA scholarship application have been low/non-existent, thus warranting a conversation between scholarship committee members.  We have decided to renew and revamp the mission of not only the scholarship committee but of the JHUMA Alumni Committee as a whole.

With that being said, four major ideas have been brought forth:

1)   1)  Dissolving the Scholarship Committee: We have decided to dissolve the scholarship committee in favor of a larger JHUMA Executive Alumni Board.  Those interested in joining the new board should email Heba Mustufa at heba.m...@gmail.com

2)   2) Reformatting the Scholarship: The scholarship committee will continue to offer a $1000 grant to any interested undergraduate.  However, there will no longer be a deadline and the application will be first come, first serve. The committee will consider any project that has an Islamic theme and benefits the community.  Due to a recent surge of film and other various projects undertaken by JHUMA undergrads, the scholarship committee will consider creative endeavors associated with Muslim life as well. Our goal is not to limit but rather expand the minds of the JHUMA undergraduates and the wider community.

3)   3) Strengthening the Alumni Network: The primary goals of the Alumni network have been to help JHUMA alumni stay connected and to serve as a support system for alumni and undergraduates alike. In order to better fulfill these goals, the committee has proposed the following:

1.      Organize an alumni reunion within the next few months – details pending

2.      Update the alumni database

4)   4) Developing a Mentorship Program: The board is also considering initiating a program where alumni members would build connections to mentor undergraduates about college, careers, Islam in the real world, and other topics/issues.

Furthermore, we would like to hear what the wider alumni community has to say about the future direction of the JHUMA Alumni network. In order to facilitate this, we would like interested alumni to fill out a brief 3-question survey:

Nu’man ibn Bashir reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.

Sahih Muslim: Book 32, Number 6258

Assalaamalaikum,

As you may recall, the JHUMA Scholarship Committee was recently dissolved to make way for a JHUMA Alumni Executive Board more in tune with the professional and educational goals of the JHUMA community. This was determined via a short survey to the alumni listserv. With that being said, we would like to reintroduce the JHUMA Alumni committee and its new roles.

The primary role of the new JHUMA Alumni Committee will be to set-up networking opportunities between alumni members and between alumni and current students. We are hoping to arrange at least one of each every year. This will require coordination between the Alumni committee and the JHUMA community at large. Insha’allah, with patience and effort, we will be able to effectively facilitate networking opportunities and build a stronger JHUMA community.

As a secondary role, as the JHUMA Alumni committee will have a supportive role with the current JHUMA students. In the previous survey sent out to determine the future direction of the JHUMA Alumni Executive Board, one JHUMA alumnus wrote:

JHUMA Alumni Committee needs to be very dynamic and have different goals for each year. Networking events for alumni should always happen, but the incoming JHUMA classes vary in size and dynamic year-to-year. Some years, a scholarship idea might be useful. Other years, JHUMA might be more in need of support and so forth.”

In this manner, while the Alumni committee will stay out of the day-to-day issues of the current JHUMA board, but we will help in any way we can if the JHUMA board chooses to reach out to us.

Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact the board at any time. Our goal is to meet the needs of the JHUMA Alumni so please send us your thoughts.  You can contact us by emailing jhuma-alumni-e...@googlegroups.com.
