"DNA Research Beyond Genealogy: Health Information" -- Jim Rader

Jim Rader has done all of the DNA health tests and found them wanting. He will give an overview of various companies' offerings and how you can apply the information to your life.

Jim says humans share about 99 percent of their DNA yet there is an overwhelming amount of diversity in the way our bodies process and digest food. What's healthy for you might not be healthy for the next person.

Jim has had many tests run on him since 2002, including 14 from Family Tree DNA and at least four other companies. He says Viome's Health Intelligence Test is the most comprehensive health test available, providing an in-depth analysis of your microbial, human and mitochondrial gene expressions.

Jim has been involved in genealogy since the 1980s and has been a lecturer at the Family History Center seminars since the early 1990s. He's been a Folsom-Cordova adult education instructor in computerized genealogy and is also the coordinator for the Rader surname study at Family Tree DNA.

IAJGS Philadelphia Conference Will Be All-Virtual Only

After considering health concerns and travel restrictions, the IAJGS Board of Directors has decided that the 2021 IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy will be an All-Virtual Conference. The original plan was to hold it in a hotel in Philadelphia with an online option.

The pricing will be different, so persons who have registered to date will have their money returned. A new Early Bird registration will be announced shortly.

Some of the ideas the Planning Committee is considering include a virtual scavenger hunt, virtual mentoring, virtual SHARE Fair, and virtual Meals with an Expert (includes real food).

The conference website is at https://s4.goeshow.com/iajgs/annual/2021/index.cfm.

JewishGen Talks Webinar:
What Jewish Genealogists Need to Know about Jewish Given Names

Avotaynu co-owner Dr. Sallyann Amdur Sack, will give the next lecture in the series, JewishGen Talks, on Tuesday, April 13 at 2 pm ET. The subject will be “What Jewish Genealogists Need to Know about Jewish Given Names.” Registration is free with a suggested donation.

The announcement notes that all genealogy research starts with names. Though that statement seems simple enough, in the world of our ancestors, names and the issues governing them, could be quite complex. Among other topics, this talk will cover how Jews got their names, what names were chosen, amuletic names, diminutives and spelling, and what happened to names after emigration from Eastern and Central Europe.
