Hi,

My name is Sebastian Benthall, and I'm looking into jGeocoder because I or another one of the developers for the organization I work for, OpenGeo*, may have some time available to work on an open source geocoding solution.  Specifically, we want to be able to work it into a module for GeoServer**, a Java server that publishes geospatial data from a number of different backends.

So I was curious what the development community for this project was like.  From the website it looks like there is just one person, Jay Liang?  Hi!  Would you be up for more collaboration on this?  I see that you're planning a major rewrite to allow for better fuzzy matching.  It would be great to hear what those changes would entail from you.  It would also be great to bounce the ideas for things we might want to add off you to see if they are in line with the project vision.

Also, would you be averse to setting up an issue tracking system for this project?  I understand that you're busy, but it would help me and my colleagues collaborate with you if there were a place we could do ticketing and documention.  If we started working on jGeocoder we could set one up for the project if that were OK with you.  Trac and JIRA are the ones we'd be most familiar with, but

Hope to hear from you soon,
Sebastian Benthall

The development had been stopped for a while, the 'major rewrite' never started because I couldn't find the time to work on it anymore. The project is fully open and under apache2 license, which means you are free to take them and do whatever modifications you like.

Cool.  We would like to do what we can to help build the community around this project--both of developers and users.

So if we were to set up some project management infrastructure (which we would do if we started developing on it), we would much prefer to do it in a way that worked for the people on this list.  So it would be great to hear any input about that.

Also, not sure what the process is for submitting patches right now.  Jay, it sounds like you're saying we should just fork and set up our own repository?  Would you prefer that to extending commit rights on the original one?

Oh, my bad, there's already the JIRA tracker set up here:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/JGEOCODER

Although it looks like it's not really in use.  Would that be the best place to post issues and patches?

It's not really being used, also the quality of the code is not ready for plug and play so it will take a bit more work to make it usable to more people.

You are welcome to fork the code base, or if you want to just take over the project, I will just add you as an admin to you can maintain it going forward.
