FIT is written like someone who was rediscovering the joy of functional
programming by way of object-oriented programming. It would be a lot more
accessible to new people, and a lot safer, if it was rewritten in a more
purely functional style. The user API would remain mostly consistent, but
the underlying implementation would be a lot cleaner.
