Dear Fellow-Descendant of Ozerna/Jezierna,

The Jezierna Yizkor (Memorial) Book contains articles about life in the town, its history, the people who lived and worked there, including some of their pictures and poetry, as well as the final demise of the shtetl. The book was compiled and published in Haifa in 1971, by a committee of former residents of Jezierna in Israel. Some articles were composed in Hebrew, but most were written in Yiddish, the lingua franca of the town.

Scanned images of the Yizkor Book, in its original languages, can be viewed and copied online at the website of the New York Public Library.  http://yizkor.nypl.org/index.php?id=1289

It is important that this treasure of our ancestral town be translated into English and Hebrew, languages that the present and future descendants of the original residents can understand.  Our grandparents' history needs to be preserved and transmitted to our grandchildren. We are the link in the family chain that can connect our youth to their heritage.

The genealogy website JewishGen provides free access to translations of Yizkor Books from the destroyed Jewish communities of Europe. Some sections of the Ozerna Yizkor Book, including the Table of Contents, Necrology and several chapters have already been translated into English and can be viewed on the JewishGen website. We are in the process of revising their format and spelling errors.

The long-range plan is to translate the articles into both English and Hebrew and make them available online.
In order to accomplish this humongous task, we are reaching out to all Ozerna descendants, asking you to be a part of this memorial effort.
Do you have translated excerpts from the book that you are willing to donate to the project?
Do you have experience translating from Yiddish to English or Hebrew or from Hebrew to English?
Do you know any qualified people who would volunteer to do some translations?

In anticipation of the difficulty in finding qualified volunteer translators from Yiddish to English or Hebrew, a fund has been initiated on the JewishGen Yizkor Book website, in order to engage a professional translator for some of the articles in the 354-page book.
The projected cost for complete translation is in the range of  US $9,500. JewishGen will be responsible for paying the translators.
US tax-deductible receipts are issued for donations to the fund.

Donations for the OZERNA Yizkor Book  project can be made at

Scroll down the town list until you reach OZERNA.

Please forward this letter to members of your family and other Ozerna families that you know about.  There is a large Ozerna diaspora whose members may be interested in this project.

We look forward to your participation in our communal project.
