I seem to remember reading a paper from Prof. Demsky about common nouns in the Bible that have been taken by later writers or commentators to be proper names. But I forgot what the term was that he used for this phenomenon and where he wrote about this. Can somebody please refresh my memory?

Yes! That's the term I was looking for. I'm particularly thinking about confusing titles for proper names in the Bible. Possibly examples might include Rabshakeh, Pharaoh, Avimelech, Agag?, all of which seem to be titles but are used in Tanach as though they were personal names. Can anybody point me to some sources or ideas on this topic?

The first two, Pharoah (Egyptian: “Great House” = Palace, cf. White House, Ten Downing) and Rabshakeh שר המשקים are indeed titles. The second two are proper names that have been interpreted as titles because of exegetical problems of different sources or anachronism. See the Encyclopaedia Miqrait.

All the best,

Aaron
