Dear Jewish names scholars,
I'm looking for a book, article, or website that lists pronunciations and derivative forms of modern/contemporary Hebrew-origin personal names in non-Ashkenazi Jewish communities. Something like Beider's Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names but for Indian, Georgian, Bukharian, Italian, Persian, Juhuro, etc., communities.

Thanks in advance,
Sarah

Please let us know if you do end up finding such a thing, but I doubt it exists.
Although, Rabbi Nissim Davidi <rnda...@gmail.com> is apparently an expert in Jewish Persian names and I've consulted with him in the past.
There also this book https://tablet.otzar.org/#/b/167188/p/30/t/1701171527341/fs/0/start/0/end/0/c/1701171884974 which lists many contemporary names, but you'll have to figure out on your own which ones are specifically "non-Ashkenazic."

Hi Sarah,

The only scholarly studies known to me are the following articles:
(1)  La corrispondenza fra nomi ebraici e nomi locali nella prassi dell’ebraismo italiano present in
Colorni, Vittore. 1983. Judaica minora. Saggi sulla storia dell'ebraismo italiano dall'Antichità all'Età moderna. Milan: A. Giuffrè, pp.661-825. Here, Colorni discusses the Italian equivalents (kinnuim) used for various shemot ha-qodesh.
(2) Bornstein-Makovetsky, Leah. 1997. Jewish names in Istanbul in the 18th and 19th centuries: A study based on bills of divorce. These are the names: Studies in Jewish onomastics, 1 (ed. Aaron Demsky et al., Joseph Tabory, Joseph A. Reif, and Edwin D. Lawson). Ramat Gan: Bar Ilan University Press, pp. 13-26.
(3) Several articles present in Pleasant are their names. Jewish names in the Sephardi diaspora (ed. by Aaron Demsky). Bethesda, MD: University Press of Maryland. 2010. They include:
(a) First names n Sephardi Communities, by Ora Schwarzwald
(b) Jewish names, surnames, and nicknames of Nabeul, Tunisia, by Victor Hayoun
(c) Personal names of Izmir Jews in modern times, by Leah Bornstein-Makovetsky
(4) Réflexions sur l’onomastique judéo-nord-africaine in Corcos, David.1976. Studies in the History of the Jews of Morocco. Jerusalem: R. Mass, pp. 131-157.

There is also a popular book by Mathilde Tagger "Dictionary of Sephardic Given names" (Avotaynu Inc. , 2015). On p. 9, the author provides a concise list of diminutive suffixes found in the Ottoman Empire.

During the last years, I published already several chapters of my ongoing project "A Dictionary of Jewish surnames from the Ottoman empire and neighboring territories": those about Iraq, Georgia, and the Land of Israel. In the first two of them, there is a detailed discussion about the way hypocoristic forms of given names were created in Iraq and Georgia (because there are surnames derived from these given names). All these texts are available in my Academia page. In my book "A Dictionary of Jewish surnames from Maghreb, Gibraltar, and Malta" (2017), there is a similar detailed discussion about patterns of creation of hypocoristic and pet forms of given names for Maghrebi Jews. All chapters of this book (but not the dictionary portion) are also on my Academia page.

Hope this helps,
  Sasha

Chalom Sarah and Alexandre,

I am sorry but my English is not so good, I prefer to write to you in Hebrew or in French…

I want to inform you that my new article in Hebrew "first names in judeo-arab-tunisian with the parallels in different languages" is going to be published in Israel by the Bar-Ilan University. This is a little "dictionary" of last names with a lot of explanations about sources and etymology for almost everyone.

I will send it to you, in PDF, as soon as possible.

Berakhoth, yours
